Pros
Tropicana is currently going through hard times but the new organization that is emerging looks to be a solid company with a lot of experienced leadership
Cons
They are currently in bankruptcy and the economy is slowing down which is really hurting the casino industry as a whole.
Advice to Senior Management
I believe the new senior management is doing a fantastic job and look forward to many years with them.
Pros
Laid back office atmosphere and relatively low expectations since the properties are pretty downtrodden. Come and go as you please. Most everyone is very friendly and laid back. The office is very small so you have the opportunity to learn a lot if you want. You get what you need (laptop, blackberry, etc.) but don't expect any kind of crazy perks.
Cons
The company lacks direction which is a function of the bankruptcy and now, because of Icahn's ownership. Quite frankly, the compensation and benefits packages really, really, really suck. Some people are WILDLY overpaid and some are almost criminally underpaid. I know at least one non-exec who makes more than one of the execs. A single person can expect to pay $100+ per check for health insurance and for those with families on the plan, it is at least $300+ per check. Expect no bonuses, stock, employee contracts, or raises. My colleagues at other companies honestly think I am joking with them when I tell them this. It is not a joke.
Advice to Senior Management
Quit using "well if they don't like it, tell them good luck on the job market" as your underlying employee mangement philosophy.
Pros
Small casino gaming company with properties in Indiana, New Jersey, Mississippi, Louisiana and Nevada. Assets include river boats, casinos and freestanding hotels.
Cons
There is not a property in Las Vegas to have presence for the gamblers to use a shared card service.
Advice to Senior Management
A property in Las Vegas would help build a national casino brand to compete with the smaller gaming companies that have national presence.
Pros
The pay is decent for most of the job positions, they provide pretty good training and opportunities for employees of the company. This is a good place to start a career and learn the basics of the casino and resort industries.
Cons
They do not always promote the most qualified people for the job, the company is not the most stable in the world and the future of the company was a bit unsettling.
Advice to Senior Management
Keep the good senior leaders (General Managers in particular) in their jobs instead of moving them around and putting people with worse leadership skills in their positions.
