I worked at True North Inc. full-time

    Pros

The principal owners care about the employees. They're great people and are very smart. They're very good at recruiting talent and creating a healthy, competitive creative atmosphere. The benefits are good too.

    Cons

The pace of evolving isn't quite what it used to be.

I worked at True North Inc. full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    • Relaxed environment • Ownership of projects, as a Jr. designer I was really allowed to own projects from beginning to end. • Fun office parties (every holiday had one, including season premier parties) • Overall some really nice people work here • As my first job in the city, I'm grateful it was here.

    Cons

    • A lot of projects we're the same, sometimes you'd ache for a new exciting project. But it's all based upon the clients needs, which is understandable. • Design life here comes in waves. You don't have projects to work on for a couple days, and then all of a sudden you have a couple days worth of projects due at once. All depends on the season really. • Not a fast paced agency, can be good for some, but dull or boring for others.

    Advice to Management

Keep striving for success, it's been 20 years and you're still in the business. Also, push your juniors to their creative limits. They can do heavy lifting on projects and might surprise you.

I have been working at True North Inc. full-time

    Pros

Collaborative environment. Smart people who actually care about the employees. Little to no politics. A good work-life balance. Promote from within so everyone gets an opportunity. They know who they are and have a steady eye on where they want to go.

    Cons

A few egos that are like annoying gnats. But that's at every place you work. They're a smaller mid-size shop. If you're looking to get with a company that's going to be hot shop that grows quickly, that's not True North

    Advice to Management

    Keep it up

Talented team, great work environment. Room for growth and career opportunities. Upper management always puts employees first.

    Cons

Nothing unusually more than what a typical ad agency goes through. Sometimes a few growing pains.

    Pros

Big clients. Foster a learning environment, where if you can learn quickly you'll be an effective contributer in no time. No annoying timesheets or "your performance review is basically based on hours worked".

    Cons

Somewhat of a con... workers expected to do all the pushing themselves for advancement and salary growth. Not really a con, but it would have been nice to know that rewards don't just come to those work hard and effectively, but you have to be forward about wanting them too.

    Advice to Management

Interface a little more with those doing the grunt work. Not that you have to micromanage or be "best friends", but the occasional real-time check in (rather than yearly performance review or the like) makes for a more engaged workplace.

    Cons

It is definitely not 9-5. You will feel guilty for leaving at 5:30 Pay is horrible and below market pay.

    Advice to Management

the HR lady is not so great, hire another one! Listen to your employees and their needs.
