I worked at True Value full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Friendly co-workers, decent full-time benefits. Rotating weekends for every employee which is nice since most retailers require employees to work most weekends.

    Cons

To many managers, disorganized and conflicting direction from leaders. Don't get on the managers bad sides because they will screw you over some how, very vindictive. No advancement, no opportunities to advance in the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Design a better management philosophy, get an employee hand book and follow your own rules that you set forth, don't just enforce them on specific people. Learn to communicate and to be truthful and honest with your employees. Treat others like you would want to be treated.

I have been working at True Value full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

True Value has a great mission and vision, to support locally owned businesses across the U.S. and around the world. The culture is warm, and believes in their cause and their core values. They're also preparing and getting aligned for growth.

    Cons

It's been a slow-moving, siloed organization for years, and hasn't invested much in infrastructure over the past few decades (which I believe was out of a good intention to be stewards of member/shareholder funds. But you know what they say about "the road to hell"). They're vastly behind technologically, and while they're looking to change this, and change fast, the growing pains are going to be pretty harsh.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the current drive for increased collaboration and focus on the customer chain.

    Pros

    Company celebrates employees, great benefits

    Cons

People stay at this company forever which means there's little room for growth in a single department.

I worked at True Value full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great place to learn about "stuff." Good Benefits. Some vacation. Nice location. Family run. Eugene Hardware is a fixture in the South Eugene community.

    Cons

Customer service responsibilities. The retail business needs certain levels of staffing and that can lead to a certain amount of inflexibility of schedules. However, there is no unreasonable inflexibility in scheduling here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Put more responsibility in the hands of the employees. Department heads should be more involved with ordering and setting displays. Up-to-date sales figures should be made available to employees on a regular to spur innovation and foster a light-hearted competition between departments.

I worked at True Value full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Doing your job well gives the independently owned hardware stores a better chance at profitability. A lot of great, knowledgeable people to work with. A fairly collaborative atmosphere among associates across all departments. For the most part, not a company of micro-managers.

    Cons

Project deadline pressures can mean later hours and weekends at work for extended periods of time. In my case, the company allowed years of achievement and positive reviews be belittled by the opinions of one new to the company supervisor. Company lags far behind the times in their uses of new retail technology. Limited resources to make dramatic positive changes within the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Value people's overall performance and contributions to the company. Social media, YouTube and other digital retailing tools are here to stay. Don't be so afraid to make use of them. Even a company with limited resources can do some amazing things online these days.

I have been working at True Value

    Pros

-The store hasn't been updated since the late 80's, but that adds to the rustic mom-and-pop vibe that the place is known for.
-The learning curve is pretty steep, given that most customers have off the wall questions, but you learn where things are in the store quickly as part of it.
-You also learn how to problem solve and think outside of the box to solve various situations.

    Cons

-You need to keep track of your own hours as I've had times that the paycheck doesn't match up
-It's essentially a dead end job with minimal room for advancement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Advertise more! Good show of employee appreciation! Update the POS and computers to at least the early 2000s please.
