I have been working at Tulane University part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Having a job as a student is helpful to pay expenses. It is nice to be able to also do homework while working.

    Cons

The pay is very minimal here. Job options are limited and are not super professional in most cases.

I worked at Tulane University full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Salary is competitive. Most classes are taught well. Campus is pretty. Great city to have fun in. Other graduate students are supportive.

    Cons

Most faculty care nothing for their students and treat them with disrespect. The undergrads are often rich, entitled kids that just want to party and then complain and cause problems when they don't get A's. In addition, the staff are often an obstacle to productivity....on this note, facilities services is the worst.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your graduate students with respect. They are underpaid, overworked, and their careers depend on the whims of their advisers. The staff should actually provide helpful, friendly, and speedy customer service instead of the alternative.

I worked at Tulane University full-time

    Pros

Good faculty are good, caring, considerate, ethical and great mentors.

    Cons

The bad faculty members are REALLY bad and make life hell. All it takes are a few bad apples to really cause problems.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take complaints about unethical, abusive and dishonest faculty seriously.

I have been working at Tulane University part-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Prestige, access to top technology, training, resources, living in New Orleans.

    Cons

Opportunities for advancement are rare, management will nickel and dime you, cut pay while increasing work responsibilities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

This university could truly thrive if there were more full time positions with excellent benefits including ADEQUATE HEALTH CARE--instead of so much reliance on cheaper part-time and contract work. Most departments are not adequately staffed and so employees must wear multiple hats. Stress is painfully high, morale is low. Turnover is egregious, which erodes the departmental culture, makes communication exceedingly challenging and creates more work for those who decide to stay. In the multiple departments I've worked in I've seen dozens of good workers but overall nobody seems to feel pride in working for Tulane. "A job is a job" is the general mantra, and loyalty has definitely eroded over the 8+ years I have been there.
