I worked at Tulane University full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Free tuition waiver for children and employees
    Vacation
Closed between Christmas and New Years

    Cons

No opportunity for employees to take relevant courses during work day. Night courses did not apply to job.
Upper management does not support workers. HR only there to keep company from getting sued.
No life-work balance. When someone leaves work is redistributed to remaining employees.
    Raises are a joke
Health insurance premiums are constantly being absorbed by employee, resulting in making less each year, even with a 2-3% raise if they actually give a raise that year.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you abuse your employees, they will eventually leave.

I have been working at Tulane University

    Pros

Pretty good students. Lots of programs that support students, which makes you feel better about your job.

    Cons

Very poor pay, even the cost of living in New Orleans has gone up sharply recently. The university will invest in a few special programs but leaves many far behind, and just doesn't care. Lots of employees seem to be dissatisfied.

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Tulane University full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good benefits (currently); university setting can be pleasant and civilized

    Cons

Poor pay scale with limited raises that don't keep pace with cost of living; repeatedly recurring discussions and rumors about significantly cutting the most attractive benefits; limited opportunities for growth; very limited advocacy for the "little guys"; attractive compensation for upper-most levels, not so great for the rest of us

I worked at Tulane University full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Children get to go to Tulane on a tuition waiver.

    Cons

Tulane overworks its salaried employees. If someone leaves, work gets dumped on the remaining employees and the abandoned position typically doesn't get filled. Few raises. No room for advancement. When one does get a 2-3% raise, it doesn't come close to keeping pace with inflation. Increases in healthcare costs are pushed onto employees while the coverage gets worse. All in all, the tuition waiver is not worth the stress the job puts on the employee.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Eliminate top heavy management. Eliminate extreme waste. Show the employees that their efforts are appreciated by giving them the compensation that they are due.
