ProsFree food. Great responsibility.Great office. Start up environment. Intelligent people

ConsGetting big is actually troubling the company

Advice to Senior ManagementIts for Managers out there.
When giving a project, you must define what you want or else the project will be vague and never will be completed.
Please give feedback honestly. Everybody welcomes encouragement but positive criticism is needed for a guy to correct himself and develop.

Software Engineer (Current Employee)

ProsReady for IPO means good benefit + various projects + strong will for growth.
People are awesome: we really care about each other.
Fascinating food!

ConsReally not much cons I can think of. If there is one, it should be "I really want a laptop larger than 13 inches".
Oh, even better if we have more positions for working standing up.

Good company, Very smart People, Pre-IPO bubble

Staff Software Engineer (Current Employee)
San Francisco, CA

I have been working at Twitter full-time for more than 3 years

Pros- Great CEO. Very transparent and genuinely cares about the company
- Very smart people (May be due to the Pre-IPO bubble but thats fine!)
- Really Challenging problems to work on
- Competitive Salaries and excellent stock awards for engineers

Cons- *Lots* of Engineering managers for a company of this size.
- Most of the Engineering managers are non-technical and add little-value (but do create a lot of noise)
- Alarming amount of internal politics for a company so small (of ~2000 people)!. Feels like a company with 10x the number of people.

Advice to Senior ManagementTwitter has too many "Engineering" Managers. I can't comment on non-engineering teams (Most of the Engineering managers have less than 8 reports). Most of the are non-technical and add little value. Infact they get in the way.

- There is no clear career guidance defined for employees. Engineering Managers rarely discuss 'career levels' or provide guidance

- Many engineering teams work on stuff that is not very useful but somehow build a narrative that sounds grand and totally justifies the work. Again a technically competent Engineering manager would have helped!

Smart people and difficult problems

Engineering Manager (Current Employee)
San Francisco, CA

I have been working at Twitter full-time for less than a year

ProsGreat food. Plenty of awesome people to collaborate with and learn from. Real sense of care of employees, and a great development environment.

ConsDifficult for management to shift people from roles they are not doing great at.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe creative to find ways to identify bad managers and bad engineers, and give them a chance to thrive in different environments.
