    Pros

Good people work there and the State provides good benefits.

    Cons

Low Pay and path to advancement not clear.

    Advice to Management

Provide a clearer path to advancement and pay closer to the average salary in area.

    Pros

Large amount of specialties and makes for someone to make a large impact quickly; challenging assignments and use new enterprise systems for HR.

    Cons

Managers do not delegate and can't make a decision; top management is not aware of the day to day; people leave and new people take job of someone that is being forced out. Bad morale continues.

    Pros

The only good things were the insurance, pay, time off, and time spent on the road with the men and women that actually did the work.

    Cons

Working directly for the District Engineer and dealing with upper management. Upper management does not know the first thing about how to run a successful safety program, or anything else for that matter.

    Advice to Management

Management needs to get out of their Crystal Palace and spend more time with boots on the ground. Everyone except upper management are good, hard working people who put in an honest day's work for an honest day's pay.

Workers do not trust upper management with good reason, upper management lies, cheats the system, and ignores the rules because the District Engineer thinks the rules don't not apply to him. Safety Director is a puppet to Administration and will talk out of both sides of his mouth just to get his numbers up. Upper management leads you on making you believe everything is fine and then stabs you in the back. It is not a good place to work and I would not wish it on my worst enemy!

    Pros

Very good agency with great benefits. Very flexible with leave and appreciates their employees. The benefits are second to non and out weigh the level of stress that comes with the job.

    Cons

Very demanding job with high stress levels. Work does not slow down and you have to operate at a very fast pace. You get calls after hours and your work phone is constantly getting important emails and calls even on your days off.

    Advice to Management

Would like to see responsibility shift whenever Supervisor is on leave so that He/She is not having to take calls or emails while on vacation/sick/ or any type of leave. This will give an opportunity for others to grow and gain experience while the Supervisors personal life will not be interrupted.

    Pros

Great people to work with; caring and competent executive leadership; dedicated employees committed to serving Texans; strong training program to learn new skills or to change career direction; positive career growth, due to the complexity of the many projects and programs.

    Cons

technical career ladder is a bit more limited than the management career ladder. The work load at times can be excessive in certain work areas, while light in others, so the work is not always balanced.

    Advice to Management

You are doing a good job; the changes made over the last few years have significantly improved the agency.

  9. Steady but with very few incentives to progress forward.

    Pros

Stability and a steady work environment. It is a great place if you like having a flexible schedule. It is also a place where you can obtain quite a bit of knowledge within the civil engineering discipline.

    Cons

Unless you are trying to become an engineer or are an engineer there is virtually no ability to advance within engineering. Basically stated, it is hard to impossible to advance as a design tech.

    Advice to Management

Invest more money and time with the individuals who are or were planning to make a career with the state. It's not just about the young engineers. If you treat your designers badly then they will leave. The result is the engineer heavy establishment you created will have virtually no experience designing.

    Pros

The only pro for engineering technicians is job security.

    Cons

Culture revolves around creating the appearance that everything is working well.
    Clueless management at every level.
Spineless management at most every level.
    Micromanagement (depends on the office).
    Lack of integrity and ethics.
Lack of consistency in processes between offices.
Low pay doesn't keep up with today's cost of living.
    Weak raises.
    Government run.
Work to pay ratio are too far out of balance.
Behind the curve in technology though they are trying to catch up (at least the Houston district)

    Advice to Management

    Get a clue.
    Grow a spine.
Integrity and ethics: learn and apply.
