I worked at Tyco full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Decent salary, most managers are flexible to allow for decent work/life balance, good knowledgeable and friendly employees.

    Cons

Upper Management always says that "Our employees are our most valuable asset" and they always talk about how much free cash we have available. At the same time they are quick to outsource and lay off their "most valuable assets" and not replace the voids making more work for those left behind. This has employees always looking over their shoulders and making the work environment unfavorable.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Truly invest more in your people instead of just saying you are doing this. Stop getting rid of your "most valuable assets" and keep the people who have helped you achieve all the free cash you have on hand and again invest in them.

I have been working at Tyco

    Pros

Great techs that care about customer service

    Cons

Horribly way over management that never thinks of the customers. Management that have never and will never learn about being in the field. They keep the techs around to have people to lay blame on about all the flaws in their systems and every customer complaint.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to the techs. They have all the answers. And by the way. Do something about the miserable pay.

    I worked at Tyco

    Pros

I did like the fact that the company does put you through an extensive training for 2 weeks. The company does provide you with a company car and gas card.

    Cons

In my particular case, I ended up in the hospital and home for 2 weeks soon after I finished training. I was anxious to get back to work to not fall to far behind. For some reason, I couldn't any time with my sales manager to get caught up on some things. They have a complicated database system for finding parts, recreating contracts and proposals. The biggest problem though was that in the beginning of your training, you really have to depend on sales engineers to put together fire proposals as well as some other products and that can take weeks to get the plans back.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I think more emphasis needs to be placed on mastering their database system before you hit the field, because you can't even spit out a proposal without that. If the manager is not going to support the reps, at least set up a pairing with an experienced rep for the first few weeks out of training. There are a lot of moving parts to wrap your head around in the beginning.
