I have been working at Tyson Foods-Arkansas as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Tyson has a great program called "Summer Intern Series," where they take you on multiple plant tours and host networking events. Autonomous and team-oriented work environment.

    Cons

Tyson tends to give interns busy work, however that is to be expected. Tyson also has a fast-paced environment, however that could be viewed as a pro.

I worked at Tyson Foods-Arkansas full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Tyson Foods is one of the largest meat companies in the world. It has grown through numerous acquisitions and organically, so it is a mix old timers and many new people who have relocated to NWA.

    Cons

The challenge for Tyson Foods is integrating the corporate acquisitions and merging the cultures of the diverse people and companies it has acquired. Sometimes these cultures clash, and often they can be territorial protecting their self interest rather than the good of the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Under Donnie Smith, Tyson has taken a turn for the better. I see him as a visionary leader who can unite the goals and direction of the company.

    Pros

Decent work-life balance, good culture, great people

    Cons

Training is limited, lack leadership development programs, and some senior leaders are allowed to rule like tyrants - running off anyone who questions them.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remember who we were before we bought Hillshire. Who we were, what we did, and how we did it is the reason we were in a position financially to acquire Hillshire.

    Pros

Great bonus structure, constant development opportunities for self improvement, flexible to work with regarding family issues.

    Cons

The biggest issue with Tyson is the constant restructuring that goes on every 18-24 months, it makes it challenging to be consistent with customers, but not impossible.

I worked at Tyson Foods-Arkansas full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

I had a great time working for Tyson foods for 2 years. I worked in the production management world and thoroughly enjoyed the fast paced environment as well as the family-like relationships you develop with your team. I think that Tyson truly has the right intentions and have a great "small company" feel despite being a near $40 Billion company. I met with multiple VPs of Operations as well as the CEO on multiple occasions and thought they were very intelligent and kind individuals.

    Cons

Extremely time consuming. I would often find myself working fully through the weekends, 90 hour weeks, and 15 hour days. Although I enjoyed the work, they generally didn't care for personal time and instead the focus was the work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There is really minimal amounts of things that can be done because of the nature of the industry but perhaps I would recommend that there be more of a focus on retention of individuals as opposed to just running through them until they want to leave.
