I have been working at U-Haul full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Did gain some experience as a manager.

    Cons

Very long hours, low pay. I was a manager and the pay left a lot to be desired. Worked 6 days a week at salary position. Equated to about 60 hours a week. Place is a joke. High turnover, people just burn out, and mang knows we are replaceable.

I have been working at U-Haul part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The ability to work from home. Fair pay for a part time position. Co-workers are nice and will help you if they can.

    Cons

Training was insufficient and we(my class) were thrown on the phones without full knowledge of how either the system worked or how to truly help customers. Management is hard to get a hold of when you need them. Also, they seem to "haze" you after week 2. You are told you will work a part time schedule, but they list you at full time hours for part time benefits. Highly stressful job with 90% of the job dealing with angry customers being transferred from other departments seemingly at random.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fully train your reps before putting them on the phone lines. Be available and able to answer questions when needed and please work within the availability of your employees instead of overworking your employees with full time hours with part time benefits.

I have been working at U-Haul part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    Starting pay isn't that bad
Offer benefits for those who work more than 20 hours per week
    Flexible schedule

    Cons

Never during the interview was I told about the amount of angry customers who would call in
Customers do not seem to understand why they cannot always pick up where they prefer and get angry when you attempt to explain to them it's a preferred location only
Customers do not plan ahead and refuse to pick up anywhere other than where they request
TCM is responsible for having programs in place to meet customer demands in all areas within the MCO so if they are slow to react to customer demand your job becomes much more diffcult

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You should seriously consider having new hires work at a U-Haul center sometimes so they are more prepared to answer customer questions about the equipment that cannot always be found on the website.
The reservation system should better inform customers that their location is preferred only and that they may not pick up from that location
Call center employees need to pay better attention for conditions in place when demand is high and travel is involved.

I have been working at U-Haul part-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Educational. Fun if you like working with your hands. Oppertunities for discounted equipment. I received free installations as a form of training.

    Cons

Mostly outside work. Very dirty. Sr Management doesn't understand the work we do and sets unattainable goals for store managers. Customers are always upset, then again who is excited to be moving??

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Come work in the yard for a week with the underlings and see if you could keep up with high standards you require.

I have been working at U-Haul part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Challenging environment, can be very fast pace. Great experience and good people to work with. Team members look out for each other, very tight knit crews within their own stores. Policy driven system offers protection and guidelines for team members and make it cut and dry when it comes to what you can do, good structure.

    Cons

The pay is not always representative of your workload. Can be discouraging at times.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find better ways to appraise team member's workload and contribution in reference to their compensation. Too many incredible team members leave simply due to pay.

I have been working at U-Haul part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

-They are willing to work around you schedule for your primary job and accept that they are the secondary job.
-Very laid back atmosphere. No one really cares what you do during downtime as long as you're getting your work done.
    -The training provided was adequate.
-For the most part, the work has been rewarding.
-The benefits offered aren't bad for part-time positions.

    Cons

-Things can be kind of stressful when you get busy, especially when you are the only one there.
-The pay isn't really all that great.
-They are very anti-union and have propaganda posted about it.
-None of the managers are there on the weekends even though that is the busiest time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-Try to be there when things are busy.

    I worked at U-Haul full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Employee Cafeteria serves good affordable food.

    Cons

Always hire from within which should be a good thing, but people have been here so long they have no idea how a "normal" company works. These long timers could never make it anywhere else.

Extremely heavy workload and employees are not valued.

Other than the work from home reservation jobs I wouldn't wish a job at U-Haul on my worst enemy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

These "long timers" have no clue how to manage. Its 2014, start running this place like a modern company.

Spend the money to hire top notch programmers who can update the severely outdated programs employees are forced to use.

I have been working at U-Haul part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Decent hourly wage for what I do
Offers some benefits to part timers
Offers an in depth look at what happens when you make a reservation

    Cons

Job is dependent on how good your traffic manager is
Deal with lots of angry customers over the phone
Summers are so busy your phone won't stop ringing until you log out of the phones after you close

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The salaried positions at uhaul centers are way underpaid for the results expected. You can't build a culture when you're constantly running your managers into the ground and experiencing high turnover. The asm position is a joke. They're full time 40 hour employees destined to be a gm one and make $10 an hour and are treated like a customer service rep
