I have been working at U-Haul part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Flexibility, great for college students, a place to make a buck but not a living.

    Cons

Opportunities for advancement are very limited. If you do advance, it will be demanding at the sacrifice of family time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take care of your people who work the hardest - this means monetarily.

I have been working at U-Haul part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good GM with solid management skills at my location. Co-workers are friendly, professional and always willing to act as a team.

    Cons

Company views employees solely as a means to an end. General philosophy is that any moron off the street can be a CSR and thus they are compensated in that manner. This has been clearly stated by upper management. Not at all competitive starting hourly wage as I doubt the company conducts any type of compensation survey of similar positions in the market. Work is very pysical and requires a good mix of technical, mechanical, customer service skills and an ability to deal with what are often difficult customers. Yes, this is retail and should be expected, however, there are other employers who at least value effort; this company does not. Employees are expected to take in-depth online training on their own time (at home) which is clearly a violation of Federal Labor Laws as your are not compensated for this requirement. If you're looking for interim work, have no expectation of a career and understand that you are simply a utility for uhaul, you would be a good short-term fit until you find something more suitable. Decisions are often made by those who have never worked a counter and employee input is implicitedly discouraged. Shut up; work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management doesn't care what anyone's advice is. Don't expect that your opinion will influence any decsion. Company enjoys success on the backs of their employees and a market in which there is no real competition with a similar business model. The culture, if you can call it that, resembles that of what existed before organized labor.

I have been working at U-Haul part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Steady work, even if often mistakes are made. I have never seen such incompetence anywhere. Most people still manage to hang on to their jobs even after many mistake, such as opening the store 15 to 30 minutes late.

    Cons

The company uses a cost-cutting strategy, therefore, the pay is very low.

    Pros

Good starting point for those needing work experience

    Cons

    Micromanagement on ALL levels
    Zero Autonomy
    Illegal labor practices encouraged
Expectation of hours and effort worked not equal to compensation

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Follow labor laws, and ensure employees are following it also.
Do not micromanage. Instead, train management to do their jobs as autonomously as possible.
Pay your employees what they're worth, and they won't leave.
