great work environment for self-motivated people

    Client Relationship Manager (Current Employee)
    Colorado Springs, CO

Prosno micro-managing, you are in it for the long run, no high turn-over, very fair management,

Conspolitics get in the way sometimes

Advice to Senior Managementkeep open communication, have your emotions in check

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Great, if you like running in place.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsGreat pto and 401k. Not a headache if you don't mind not being compensated.

ConsFavoritism in upper management. Tenured employees are put through the ringer to earn a promotion while the company will hire people right off the street with no experience for the SAME POSITION. Blatant disregard for the advancement of associates. High turnover. Now, I am speaking for the retail banking division so it may be completely different in other areas. Stay with the company long enough and your job description grows and grows while your check and title WILL NOT. However it's great while you are in school or if you just need something but it's literally mind dumbing.

Advice to Senior ManagementThere is no real advice I could give.

    Pleasant and stressful

    Bank Teller (Former Employee)
    Whiteman AFB, MO

ProsAbility to get promoted, Pay for extra sales

ConsExpectation of selling credit cards and products, low pay as a teller

Advice to Senior ManagementI know its great to get people to apply for credit cards and products, that's how they make money. UMB goes a little over-board on sales. I saw countless times how stressed our managers would get if we didn't make our credit card sale.aka hounding customers to apply. Its just not good customer service to ask a customer every time they come in if they want a cc, but if we didn't meet our goals then we got chewed for it..

It was a good place to start my career. In the end, I was treated poorly.

    Vice President (Former Employee)
    Kansas City, MO

ProsIt is a well-respected bank that is built for the long haul, with many experienced, knowledgeable employees. There are opportunities to explore different career paths.

ConsThere are a lot of poor managers. Many managers are unfairly promoted and are allowed to bully and create a hostile work environment. Many great employees are not fairly compensated while others are overpaid.

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat employees with more respect. Fire abusive managers who are bad for morale.

Worked for 25 years at UMB.

    Executive Assistant (Former Employee)

ProsFor the most part great people to work with. PTO and 401k were very fair.

ConsHired management that had absolutely no banking experience. Had a manager that bullied everyone that had tenure.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen and watch is happening in the divisions. The count on more attitude towards customers should also apply to the associates.

Nice place to start in banking field.

    Teller III (Former Employee)

ProsProfessional environment. Plenty of opportunities for coaching and improvement. New restructuring of the company has helped support all branch activities. The PTO policy is awesome!

    ConsSkeleton branches.
At one point management was looking for employees to recruit new staff because of low volume of applicants.
Work life balance usually only applied to those with kids.
