From solid to shaky

Systems Performance Engineer (Current Employee)

I have been working at U.S. Cellular full-time

ProsFrom an engineering perspective, the people are just awesome! Incredible talent, knowledge and work ethic. Being a smaller company does have its benefits in some instances, a bit less red tape and management.

ConsToo small of a fish swimming in too large of a pond nowadays. Unfortunate as it is, the company is treading water and barely staying afloat it seems. The new sales software was a major hit and they are still coming. The company tries to be innovative with programs but just doesn't have the oomph (read $$$) to turn them into new customers.

Advice to Senior ManagementDecide to be a regional carrier and be the best or decide to be a national player and let the cards fall where they may. Straddling the fence between the two is a losing position.

Great place to small to compete

Agent Manager (Former Employee)

I worked at U.S. Cellular full-time for more than 5 years

ProsFriendly atmosphere, great opportunity for advancement. Was a great place to work and leadership organization was a main focus. Taught me how to become a more effective sales coach.

ConsTo Small to take over the big guys. USC was always behind on phones and technology. They always wanted to take the safe bet with proven technology I would of love to see them lead. After Jack left the company went down hill fast.

A company that thinks its much more than it is.

Retail Sales Consultant (Current Employee)

I have been working at U.S. Cellular full-time for more than a year

ProsDecent commission structure, slightly better than competitors.

ConsBad hourly salary for retail sales compared to other carriers. As I stated above, the commission structure is slightly better than our competition - - but it's getting harder and harder to make it when the company is driving customers away in droves and offers nothing in comparison to the competition. We are pricing ourselves just like Verizon and ATT, but the prices on our handsets are often twice that of the big guys. Yet, we are expected to sell, sell, sell. Management doesn't understand we can sell the same product for twice the price when our service and customer ratings are tanking.

Advice to Senior ManagementBeter pricing. We are not ATT or Verizon. We can't compete at the same price point for monthly plans with overpriced, outdated devices. Our customers are sick of everything about us, and nothing we can do can pain over the corporate mess laid at our feet. Read the Facebook posts by our customers. Would YOU buy here?

Looked good initially but once on the inside...look out.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Chicago, IL

I worked at U.S. Cellular full-time for more than 3 years

ProsFlexibility, casual atmosphere, telecommuting was acceptable depending on Manager.

ConsConstant turnover, very little mobility, poor work life balance, lack of leadership, lack of trust between dept...change is acceptable but chaos is not

Advice to Senior ManagementHire good management, take care of the employee.

So sad

Customer Service (Former Employee)

I worked at U.S. Cellular full-time for more than 8 years

ProsThe people, used to live by the DO (Dynamic Organization)

ConsIdentity crisis. It needs to go back to having the worlds best customer service, which it did at one time, to now instead having chaos, confusion, frustration, and no job security.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet back to what Jack had made us

A lot like war.

Customer Service Representative (Current Employee)
Tulsa, OK

I have been working at U.S. Cellular full-time for less than a year

ProsSteady income, great benefits and a friendly atmosphere in the actual office.

ConsExtremely depressing and frustrating. I knew a lot of people on anti-depressants. 5 hours a day with people screaming at you and your tools do not work. Also, the first 90 days is extremely sick. They create an atmosphere where new workers are encouraged to come to work sick or lose their jobs.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement was ok, but corporate needs to get their stuff together. One hand doesn't know what the other is doing. There's a severe lack of cohesiveness.
