Former Employee – worked at U.S. Cellular full-time for more than a year
Pros – (I was a Retail Wireless Consultant)
- Decent pay for what you're doing.
- Don't need much education.
- If you're in the right store, you can have a great manager and learn a lot.
- Mary Dillon, the CEO, is intelligent and is definitely trying to make the company as big as she can.
Cons – - Incredibly repetitive.
- Customers aren't usually very smart, which can be exhausting.
- You HAVE to believe US Cellular is better than everyone else in order to be successful. Ad campaigns don't usually paint an accurate picture (for example, we ran a campaign that said customers could save up to $300 a year if they switched, however, the campaign was comparing Verizon and AT&T unlimited plans to our 450 minute plans. Not quite the same.)
- Most stores don't have good management, and so you have to deal with things you shouldn't have to. For example, in my store, my manager played favorites more than anything I've ever seen. She had someone fired because she did not like them (she told me in a one-on-one), simply by writing down every single little thing they did wrong (including things that would normally be done wrong if you were new, like not signing the closing list). She said, and I quote, that "if she wants to get someone fired, she'll write down everything they do wrong until she has enough of a reason to fire them." She also used the store's ideas to further herself in her career, which builds resentment in the team.

Former Employee – worked at U.S. Cellular full-time for more than a year
Pros – Great benefits and pay for the type of work that is done.
Cons – A lot is required of you for the position you are in. Also, if you have worked for them and leave, you cannot come back.
Advice to Senior Management – You should look at the track record of previous employees before denying them.

Former Employee – worked at U.S. Cellular full-time for more than 7 years
Pros – Generally great people, work together well, good pay and benefits
Cons – If your Coach doesnt like you, you will be terminated. It will be his ambition to bring you down.Something will be "discovered" that you violated. You have to "know" people to feel secure. The Company also may want to refresh their education on Americans with Disabilities Act.This site is probably as anonymous as the culture survey.
Advice to Senior Management – Listen to the tenured associates. Listen to both sides of the story the Coaches are not always correct, the Coach will deprive you of your human qualities, personality, or spirit.

Former Employee – worked at U.S. Cellular full-time for more than a year
Pros – Great corporate culture and work-life balance. Awesome benefits! Good team of people to work with and a good company to work for. Good phone discounts for employees. Employer willing to work with folks who have a difficult health situation.
Cons – Too many calls and not enough people taking calls in the call center, but that's a subjective thing and just the way things work in an inbound call center atmosphere.
Advice to Senior Management – Don't make the price plans and features so expensive. I realize this is tough to do, but there must be a way to scale it back some, as you have a lot of rural customers who have a hard time making ends meet each month who consider having cellular service more of a necessity than a luxury.

Former Employee – worked at U.S. Cellular full-time for more than 7 years
Pros – Good salary and great benefits.
Cons – High turnover. Incompetent employees on all levels. The public mantra for US Cellular is the "best customer service in the industry." Not true. And if you are a current employee, please do not like your supervisor. If you do, they get fired. US Cellular's mentality is that if you like your supervisor, then you are working for them and not the company. Go figure!
Advice to Senior Management – Until you actually work the jobs of the employees, quit making decisions that effectively negates "best customer service in the industry."

Former Employee – worked at U.S. Cellular full-time for more than 3 years
Pros – Pay is excellent
Benefits Are Great
Other associates are good people
Cons – New Hired associates are held to a standard that is unattainable - after 6 weeks you are expected to know policies and procedures as well as a seasoned associate, and if not - see ya! I've seen several people fired ovrlittle mistakes that new associates make. You are driven by fear. You come in to work everyday scared you'll be fired. Everyone is scared to death of the all might "Privacy Violation".

Current Employee – been working at U.S. Cellular full-time for less than a year
Pros – Great benefits and starting pay, great vacation, exceptional training, workplace ammentities (showers, massage chairs, free coffee, onsite cafeteria with made to order food), friendly associates, great desks, smoker friendly, spacious parking
Cons – VERY cultish culture, must be careful about saying even the mildest of non-hr friendly things, joking about past employers and customers is frowned upon and will lead to termination if heard by "kool-aid" drinkers, associates prone to tattle on one another, must be prepared to take a big healthy dose of the kool aid to move up and around
Advice to Senior Management – Chill out with being so protective of the culture and look for strengths in employee difference, seriously stop encouraging associate spying and tattle-taleing

Current Employee – been working at U.S. Cellular full-time for more than 10 years
Pros – I work with amazing people. As long as you are learning and growing in your role, you are engaged. You can voice your concerns to leadership without reprimand, as long as you word it the right way. I have decent pay for working in a call center. There are good benefits and a 401k match.
Cons – There is no long-term career growth, unless you get promoted early and often. If you are extremely good at what you do, you will have difficulty moving up out of that role. You must watch how you word your concerns. At this point, they asked specialty queues to multi-task and take on additional roles. Morale is very low in my department as a result. Our handsets are outdated. We struggle to keep up with the rest of the industry. The scheduling is terrible.
Advice to Senior Management – Please give your long-term employees a chance to shine in other roles. Provide proper training so the long-term employees who are good at what they do don't become the default "go-to" person for every problem that pops up. When you interview, please ask questions relevant to the position you're hiring for, and please give honest feedback instead of making up reasons just because you liked a less qualified candidate better.

Former Employee – worked at U.S. Cellular full-time for more than a year
Pros – Good benefits, Good Training, ok work
Cons – Culture is depressing, CEO has no idea, Who came up with "Hello Better"??? How about Hello iPhone. Oh that's right, US cellular cannot afford it.
Advice to Senior Management – Get the iPhone
