Pros
The 'free' apartment is by far, one of the best perks you could get in a job of this level. The benefits package offered is also highly competitive for a job at this pay scale.
Cons
If you do not get an apartment as a General Manager, the company will try to tell you that a 1-2 dollar per hour raise ($172-$344 per month) is equal to a free apartment with free utilities, which in the market I worked in, worth 1200-1500 per month.
Advice to Senior Management
Please understand that when you hire people at 10-12 dollars an hour, you will get low end employees with a high turnover rate. I understand the job is very "easy", but it also requires a self motivated, business smart individual that is able to understand the business metrics behind running a property. Also, employee-management relations needs to be greatly improved at the district level.
Pros
Pay is OK
Hours and PTO is flexible
Office is not too small and it is clean (even the bathrooms are clean)
Company gives out yearly raises & bonuses
Free food, soda and cake (unless your on a diet or diabetic)
Cons
Office gossip is VERY, VERY bad
Management doesn't have a clue on how to manage nor take responsibility
Managers blame mistakes on their employees without fail
Advancement is close to impossible unless your kissing up to someone in senior management
Always looking for work to do since managers don't know how to delegate
Advice to Senior Management
Set an example to your staff by displaying leadership, knowledge and appraise employees for their good work.
Pros
Money was OK
Small office feel
Cons
Not flexible
Bad healthcare plan
Not willing to mentor/develop current employees
Untrustworthy HR department
A LOT of office gossip
Many type A personalities
Women are treated less favorably than others
Advice to Senior Management
TRAIN YOUR MANAGERS
Pros
DIscount on storage. That's about it.
Cons
$12 and hour doesn't cut it.
Advice to Senior Management
None really. I just needed a job and a place to work. Was fine for the time being. Moved on.
Pros
Good beginner experience for property management, good customer interactions
Cons
Must work weekends; low pay
Advice to Senior Management
Field employees deal with a lot on all ends; please respect that they can get frustrated.
Pros
the pros of working for U-Store-it include: wonderful, caring people, opportunities for advancement, nice office environment, great medical and dental benefits.
Cons
The down sides of working at U-Store-It include: having to spend a lot of time outside cleaning the property and making sure the halls of the storage unit buildings are swept and clean.
Advice to Senior Management
My advice to management would be to find a way in the budget to pay managers and general managers a better salary. This would definately help with the huge turnover.
