It all depends on the unit you're in

    Faculty (Former Employee)
    Little Rock, AR

ProsBecause units (academic, research, clinical areas) are so autonomous, the quality of your work experience is dependent on what unit you're in. In the academic area, the department chairs have a lot of influence on the culture and working environment. Benefits, especially retirement matching and insurance, are quite good.

ConsAgain, the variability of the work experience in different units is the big issue. People who have department chairs or unit leaders who are not effective managers tend to suffer from significant morale problems. Budget concerns in the academic health care sector (not just at UAMS) add to the sense of tension in the workplace.

Advice to Senior ManagementIdentifying poor managers and doing more than the standard HR "leadership workshop" but some real development with them (or getting them out of supervisory roles) would be very helpful in some units.

Great benefits; pay not the greatest

    Research/Clinical Program Manager (Former Employee)
    Little Rock, AR

ProsBenefits are wonderful (sick/vacation, retirement match, tuition, citywide discounts, etc.), flexible hours, worked here for 7 years...would've moved up in the company, but I moved out of state.

ConsPay is not great, but that's most state institutes.

Advice to Senior ManagementCompensation should be based on years of experience; perhaps bonuses if available.

Horrible infrastructure and poor outlook in terms of job market

    Medical Laboratory Scientist (Former Employee)
    Little Rock, AR

ProsHolidays and vacation time were good as well as flexibility of scheduling.

ConsDepartmental politics and arrogance of upper management is bringing down the whole company.

Advice to Senior ManagementRemember why you decided to go into this field. It's about improving healthcare and training the future of Arkansas medicine.

Overall, the organization is a decent place to work.

    Research Assistant (Current Employee)
    Little Rock, AR

ProsThe best reasons to work here are the benefits and the flexibility.

ConsThe main challenge to working in my current division is that one of the leaders does not have the background knowledge it takes to be in her current position. As a result, we have experienced some negative changes (i.e., high turnover) within the organization.

Advice to Senior ManagementTo better the organization, my advice to the director is to go back to square one and find out why the organization has changed overnight. It may also be very beneficial to consider promoting from within, instead of bringing in people from the outside and they make thousands more than those who have been here for a very long time. These two things right here may have retained those of greater value.

Solid place to work but not a lot of room for advancement

    Project/Program Manager (Former Employee)
    Little Rock, AR

ProsGood overall job but UAMS is a very political environment. Benefits are good. Lots of federal holidays off and good job to raise with kids because you get a lot of vacation and time off. Most of which coincides with the time your kids have off.

Conspolitics can get in the way of real progress. t is difficult to get promoted and it is not a lot of upward mobility. They don't fire people so the same managers keep their jobs for years and there is rarely any movement.

Advice to Senior Managementconsider doing more thorough review process to get rid of managers who are running away good talent. Managers are also not held accountable for not meeting their goals.

Enjoyed my time as an intern here.

    PRI Intern (Former Employee)

ProsKnowledgeable staff, great facilities, was always treated with respect as an intern, people were willing to offer insight and discuss new ideas.

ConsWith the medical field constantly changing and evolving, there were times when supervisors did not agree, which caused some friction.
