I have been working at UBM full-time

    Pros

Beautiful office. Flexible hours. Generally nice people. Good benefits package.

    Cons

Air is thick with negative energy. Practically no room for professional growth. Unreasonable layoffs - company cares more for revenue than its staff. Decisions made create the worst customer experience and then they wonder why the clients complain and don't return.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Rather than constantly making reactionary decisions, try thoughtfully creating a plan and sticking to it. Own up to your mistakes. Reward the employees that are knowledgeable and hard-working, not the phonies.

I have been working at UBM part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Telecommute policy
sometimes you can work on interesting topics and get good feedback when the editors are not on the way out the door
It was a good place a few years ago, but

    Cons

Once they started spinning out more and more boards, they lost focus and direction.
There are many signs that the company is falling apart despite their efforts to keep everything hush-hush.
Morale drops when people sense that things are not going well and there is no honest communication about it.
Some good people have left while incompetent people stay on because of entrenched cronyism.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't keep your people in the dark and get rid of those people who are really not competent at their jobs.

    Pros

    Fun environment
    People are generally friendly
    Good work/life balance

    Cons

    Very traditional with ranks
Focus is placed heavily on UK
    Opposite of flat organization

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The basics and fundamentals are all in place but we just need to spruce everything up so the morale keeps productivity at its best. Encourage an open door policy where everyone can bring something to the table and also provide feedback in a positive fashion.

    Pros

Large organization, so great benefits and good opportunity for advancement and exposure to other industries for career variety. There's a great collegiality in working for UBM, with good idea and information sharing tools.

    Cons

As with many large organizations, upper management relies on critical skill and communication of senior management who have conflicting goals for stability and growth. So goals can get blurred for middle managers and employees.

I worked at UBM full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Great B2B company and willing to experiment with new ideas in a changing market.

    Cons

Not so much a con as a fact of life in media. Long hours, hard work, you need to train yourself and be prepared for high stress and high demands. Great people though at UBM.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

While training is becoming more and more of an employee's own responsibility, it is important to understand that certain types of training are very difficult for an individual to access without support, time and some financial assistance. Tuition assistance does not usually cover certifications that are required in today's marketplace.
