ProsGood work life balance, opportunity to work remotely as long as you do your work, pay is improving, generally good people. Worst days are behind UBS.

ConsTurns a blind eye to blatant slackers which affects morale

Advice to Senior ManagementMake sure that the latest key principles are not just words.

Overall good, but not a place to stay long-term

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Weehawken, NJ

ProsThe vacation policy and benefits are some of the best I've seen. People in the sales and product organizations are no nonsense, straight shooters who are also very friendly. The have a respected brand name and the most productive Advisors on the street.

ConsThe home office has become a politically-driven, bureaucratic mess. Managers are required to force-rank employees by titles even though functional roles may be completely different. This causes a lot of infighting as people vie for an ever dwindling piece of the bonus pie. They are also looking to define a culture in an industry where competitors already have clearly established cultures.

Advice to Senior ManagementGo back to absolute rankings and really coach your employees for sucess instead of paying it lip service.

I worked in several different areas of corporate and marketing communications.

    Executive Director, Marketing (Current Employee)
    Weehawken, NJ

ProsI had a long, fulfilling career at UBS (and the former PaineWebber) and was consistently promoted and given progressively more responsibilities for most of my tenure there.

ConsA management change in 2009 brought in an executive team from Merrill Lynch. After that, the culture shifted to recruiting from outside, particularly Merrill alums, instead of promoting from within.

Advice to Senior ManagementRecognize that UBS continues to have bright, talented people despite their association with the prior management team, which the new team understandably criticized when they joined. The people they are recruiting from other firms are not necessarily smarter or more talented -- they simply lack the perceived "taint" of the old management team.

One step forward, Three steps back.

    Authorized Officer (Former Employee)

ProsI will say that the team I worked with was outstanding, and that my direct management was outstanding, given the financial crisis and other outside pressures. I am still close friends with members of that team today.

ConsPolitics at UBS, at least from the IT side of the house, are rampant. From year end evaluations and promotions to vendor selections, decisions took too long and were always under political scrutiny.

Also, its takes forever for anything to get done. The place is drowning in process. If you wanted anything to get done, you were better off doing it yourself. That in turn created a considerable amount of frustration.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake a decision on something and execute it. More time is wasted evaluating "options" on both the technology and business side. Also - eliminate the plethora of "single points of failure" across the bank and staff your organization appropriately.

    Big name, but management sucks

    Risk Intern (Former Employee)
    New York, NY

ProsBig name. Good for your resume. Yet, the atmosphere is more low-key than other big banks though. So that can be a pro but also a con, if you want to stay competitive in the industry.

ConsThey are not really helpful when it comes to the administrative part of employment. I interned there from Jun to Aug, and the result was supposed to come out by the end of internship. HR was slow. There was some mismanagement. The head of the recruiting team quit, so they said they had to wait for a call from a new guy. In the end, I had to go in and went through all the interviews again in December. This won't happen if the bank wants to stay competitive because the recruiting cycle for full time is mostly done from august to November, December. If you want till the end of December to actually start something, you lose a good batch of potential employees to other banks already.

Advice to Senior ManagementStep up your game. Be more organized and transparent.

    What's wrong with UBS

    Financial Advisor (Former Employee)
    Pittsburgh, PA

ProsHas global reach for those that want their money outside the US.Management is totally focused on ROA.Management seems to be competent.

ConsEvery department seems to have their own profit center relative to year end bonuses for management.Overly concerned about short term goals(monthly) vs yearly.

Advice to Senior ManagementDo things that are in the best interest of clients and tripping over their feet will cease.
