I have been working at UBS full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good compensation. good work culture, depending on the department and team, many hard-working, talented colleagues.

    Cons

Highly political and hierarchal, high pressure from senior management, lack of career development options, unless one is young or a graduate trainee, heavy workloads, aging IT infrastructure causes continuous problems, endless outsourcing and offshoring in IT and organizational changes creating chaos.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on developing the talent you already have, get rid of the forced rankings system you use to measure performance. It is degrading and demotivating to talented hard-working employees and destructive to the morale of any team. Microsoft, GE and many other companies have already abandoned this outdated system. Industrialization is doomed to fail.

I have been working at UBS

    Pros

Flexible work schedule depending on role and direct line management. Training and growth opportunities if employee drives those efforts for their managers. Many smart and nice people still on board trying to foster a good work environment. CEO and leadership teams are making efforts to evolve the culture but this will take years.

    Cons

Financial services isn't what it used to be. Spending at all levels and for some 'basics' (replacing worn furnishings at branches, consistent incentives for junior level employees) are being dispensed with. Off shoring model will prove only partially successful as it doesn't suit the industry service expectations - at the cost of the loss of legacy knowledge and expensive consultant-minded senior hires who are not invested in the success of the firm, rather their own CV building. Middle managers are no longer invested in building their teams as they, too, are afraid for their own security and have devolved to self-survival.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Train managers how to manage people. Throw money at those training programs and make it mandatory to attend. Staff appropriately until new processes are proven successful, rather than on the project plan time line. Get on the ground and talk to your 60,000 people. Communications teams are doing a great job upgrading our intranet but the ivory tower serves no one at this time in our history.

    Pros

International team, multi-faceted work with access to many resources. Many opportunities for further advancement internally. Good work culture, very open-minded and warm people to work with.

I worked at UBS as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Good work-life balance. Job fairly limited due to the restrictions from the Swiss gorvernment, 42H a week.
    Relaxed and helpful environment.
Competitive intern salary (and good starting salary for graduates).
Gives a broad based exposure to the asset management industry.

    Cons

Not a structured program and little exposure to other intern events.
Don't have a graduate program within asset management that one can get an offer to.
