I worked at UBS full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Nice people to work with. Intelligible people. Caring people. Great place to learn, get trained, and gain experience. Great for entry level (then leave).

    Cons

The company itself is appears awful due to the fact all decisions have to be run through Switzerland. Super cheap especially when it comes to their compliance department. They don't make counter offers...not even to their top employees. Been her four years and the CEO has had two raises (20% and 4%) while my salary has stayed the same and my work had nearly tripled. Literally only promotion per compliance team is permitted. No growth here. Compliance is not where you want to apply, not unless you take more work and pats on the back as bonus currency. Let alone many of the jobs are transitioning Nashville. Seriously they will hire less experienced people with higher titles just to bring their pay to a competitive market salary and leave the current employees dry and disappointed. And remember what I said about promotions. Essentially there is no reason to be a rock star employee here.

    Advice to Management

UBS Americas should be separate from the parent in Switzerland. Pay your rock star employees vs losing them for $15k-$20k. All it does, is build a backlog of work and bring down morale. The turnover in compliance is unspeakable.

I have been working at UBS full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Large organization, lots of different areas within Group Technology that are business lines oriented or non-oriented, average benefits.

    Cons

Location : Weehawken is very remote, GTP's get placed very haphazardly without a proper HR personnel handling it, mobility within bank is restricted, networking opportunities are limited across divisions, lack of standard procedures across divisions, career options in group technology are very limited to a couple roles, career progression is slow and very bureaucratic and depends on whether your manager is well connected to senior management. As a Graduate Trainee program employee career progression is very difficult. It takes about 5 to 7 years to become an Authorized Officer (equivalent of Associate in other firms, junior most level position in bank). No Raise for GTP's during first 3 years.

    Advice to Management

Please provide some viable career advancement options for GTP's. HR should manage their placement opportunities based on their profile and not individuals within Group Technology.

I have been working at UBS (More than 8 years)

    Pros

If under the right manager there are opportunities to grow. Outstanding "Business University" that allows for continued education (virtual or at the various training centers the firm has in place).

    Cons

Comp and promotions seem tied to heavy networking with managers and peers instead of just hard work.

    Advice to Management

Talent retention should be one of top priorities.

    Cons

I worked at UBS full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - A lot of autonomy even for junior staff members - Good work life balance

    Cons

    - People who have been in their roles for way too long - resistance to change - Hyper political environment I.e. this is the only place where I've seen MDs and ED gossip with very junior staff members - no clear directions from management

    Advice to Management

change the culture by getting some new blood in senior and mid-Managment roles. This place has the potential to be great.

I worked at UBS full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

They are attuned to family needs of their employees. They are flexible with work arrangements. They strive to enact policies to ensure compliance with applicable rules and regulations.

    Cons

Their salary patterns seem to be out of step with industry norms. Communication to staff needs to be more open. Also, their is inconsistency with what is said versus actions taken.

    Advice to Management

They need to re-evaluate their business model and the importance that is being placed on short-term savings over experience/quality and the positive long-term effect that the latter would yield.

I worked at UBS full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Putting the UBS name on resume - that's about the only good thing I took away from the experience, which was a downright awful period of time in my professional life

    Cons

-Ultra boring work -Ridiculous corporate bureaucracy -Culture of passing the buck, playing hot potato with work and projects -Hyper-politicized atmosphere, where your main job -- regardless of function/department/location -- is to protect your own butt and defend your turf so you stay employed -Obscenely understaffed, so your workload is double/triple what it really should be

    Advice to Management

Nothing I can say will do any good. The culture is just downright dysfunctional. I've never really rooted against a former employer, but I hope you guys suffer -- that will be the only thing to get your attention.
