I have been working at UC Davis Medical Center full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

UC Davis Medical Center allows for access to high quality medical journals and continues to hold a good reputation for medical research and training. Employment here adds to the quality of one's vita and helps ensure competitive employment subsequent to employment at UC Davis.

    Cons

Cons of the UC Davis Medical center include aspects such as office culture, location, non competitive pay (a function of the under-funding and budget cuts to academic medical centers in California). Like many academic medical centers, funding is largely grant-dependent resulting in job insecurity and unclear and broad job duties for all but the principal investigators.

Pressure to publish overwhelms the integrity of the science to keep the grants.

I have been working at UC Davis Medical Center

    Pros

There are great professors that will publish only flushed out studies after careful investigation and review of there lab's work. If you spend the time to interview the labs to find them it can be a good fit. There are many cheep university perks that post docs can be part of, like sports/clubs and post doctoral networking events.

    Cons

There are others that the PI only cares that the data and the hypothesis match, without review of the work that when into generating the data. With the current funding levels so low, these labs are the ones that get the grants, not the labs with good integrity. The current environment is reducing the labs with integrity and comprehensive science and promoting sloppy or made up data labs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need more power for the office of research integrity. Spot checks on lab note books, for they will find them lacking.

    Pros

Great benifits for career employees. Growth opportunities if you happen to have the right supervisor/manager.

    Cons

Often ovelook internal staff. Too quick to hire consultants we have to train. Supervisor's personal opinions often block advancement opportunities

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reviiew Management salaries and conpensate the actual staff doing the work.

    Pros

Great opportunity if you are looking for clinical research experience. Ideal for pre-med, RN or Grad students interested in pursuing clinical related research. Work with physicians and research staff to identify study candidate and interact directly with patients in a busy Emergency Dept.

    Cons

Major consideration is transportation and scheduling. If you are a UCD student and not sure about your transportation, the hours can be limiting and the commitment worth taking into consideration.

    Pros

Great benefits and they have a pension plan

    Cons

People will step on each other to try to claw their way to the top. Most people here work way out of their job description or there are too many passing the buck and not getting work done.

I worked at UC Davis Medical Center full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great benefits and pay. Good experience is dependent upon the Division manager. If you treat your fellows and faculty right, they will appreciate and multiply that ten-fold.

    Cons

Many layers of bureaucracy, which is inherent in any academic medical center, and processes that don't make sense or seem extremely inefficient.
