Pros
Great environment and great people. Have very good job security and easier to get a job if you worked at the university.
Cons
Not much room for career growth.
Advice to Senior Management
Better communication between departments
Pros
Benefits, holidays, pension, allow you take learning classes related to job
Cons
No job security.Charge employees $500+ a year for parking. Management is snobbish. No incentive to be an exceptional employee-bad workers and good workers receive the same the same raises and same treatment as good workers. Seniority based-they will layoff a great worker and keep a slacker.
Advice to Senior Management
The UC system is one of the most corrupt systems established in the State of California. They are a public* partially tax payer funded entity yet they waste taxpayer money. They have shown time and time again their elitist arrogance which has well been documented by article after article in the Sacramento Bee regarding their excessive salaries for administrators, huge student fees hikes, recent hiring of new staff by the Chancellor and she gives them $100K-200K salary increases over the past person to hold the position (and in these budget thin times !), the favoritism and layoffs taking place UC system wide---and all of this is done "in your face" because UC knows these actions will always make the news. They do not care. Taxpayers and employees are tired of the misuse of our taxes to pay for the greed of these elites.
Pros
Most students are given GSR positions which pays for tuition and gives a decent stipend. The hours are super flexible and the PI's are both supportive and knowledgeable.
Cons
GSR's don't pay much, but it covers tuition and a stipend.
Advice to Senior Management
The professors running the center are amazing. They are both extremely knowledgeable in their fields and are very willing to help their grad students.
Pros
* Good benefits
* Pension
* Good work/life balance
Cons
* Recent changes to pension are worrying for young employees far from retirement. (Will it be there when I retire?)
* Salary is not on par with private sector - but that is to be expected from a public University.
* Budget cuts are resulting in layoffs and general downsizing.
Advice to Senior Management
Understand that if you take away the pension you will need to increase salaries to keep your high performers.
Pros
You get to experience a wide variety of people from many different backgrounds. Also a variety and sometimes rare medical problems that challenge and tests your abilities. Thus increasing your knowledge and experience.
Cons
Management! Shady, favoritism. Horrible communication.
Advice to Senior Management
Equal opportunity please. No racism.
Pros
good environment, and nice research and industrical exposure
Cons
diversity, but it is ok as there is a good research environment.
Pros
flexible schedule, great research and nice place to raise a family since they have great public school system. great medical school here..you can bike here
Cons
lower pay, hot weather, far from the bay area
Pros
Benefits and Pension. Great Location.
Cons
Below average Pay. Limited growth potential.
Advice to Senior Management
Improve IT systems
Pros
Ability to work with academic leaders in your fields. Many of your peers are motivated individuals driven to be the best. The technical support staff are excellent, although the office members are sometimes slow on the uptake.
Cons
Work environment is lacking in basic amenities.
Dispersion of groups hinders collaboration.
A lack of distinct management and department goals hinders future work.
Advice to Senior Management
Please make sure that the support office staff are knowledgeable about the job they are fulfilling. Also, make sure that the department has proper student representatives to communicate issues with work environment.
Pros
Wonderful colleagues
Ability to serve students and make positive impact
Interesting work with lots of variety
Cons
Lay-offs
Expected to do more with less and having to do work of those layed-off
Depressing budgetary times
Advice to Senior Management
I'm not sure I have advice - I think that we are all doing the best we can. However, we can't continue to offer the same level of service with fewer and fewer staff. This is most unfortunate for the students who are the focus of our efforts - we wish we could do more for them not less!
