    New but good school

I have been working at UC Merced

    Pros

It is a new school therefore some aspects are still on development. The engineering buildings are new and helps the graduate students in the lab to focus on their work.

    Cons

Merced itself is a small and somewhat boring city to live in. Also for a graduate student in EECS there few options regarding classes.

    Pros

A lot of funding opportunities for graduate students. Even master student can find TAships and RAships.

    Cons

Located in a small town and the population if the students are not high.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get more budget and build more building and try to attract more students and faculties.

I have been working at UC Merced

    Pros

The Athletic Trainers were very flexible with my school and basketball schedule. They also understood the importance of academics as the first priority.

    Cons

Unfortunately, UC Merced's Intercollegiate Athletics Program is still new, which means fewer available work hours.

I worked at UC Merced full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, and good opportunities to gain experience with lab management at this campus. Because UC Merced has an undergraduate population of students, there are a lot of opportunities to train and teach students in the lab.

    Cons

I was hired for a position I was over-qualified for (Research Assistant), and executing job functions that were not congruent with the title that I was hired under. Due to the academic funding climate, I did get raises, but they were not substantial. Although I got some good experience under my belt, it was not practical to stay for more than a few years, since there are better paying jobs for doing similar things.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More review opportunities with employees to discuss expectations and goals.

UC Merced was a little rough around the edges especially in the beginning, but it still ended up being great.

    Pros

At UC Merced you end up being a big fish in a small pond rather than being a small fish in a big pond like most universities. As a researcher that means lots of equipment and attention. Also, more finding to go around. In Cognitive and Information Sciences, we usually got our number one pick of teaching assistant positions. Instructors of record were always conscious of your research demands and made the teaching responsibilities pretty basic.

    Cons

Sometimes there is a shortage of teaching assistants, which is usually unheard of at other universities. And because of this shortage it is possible for teaching assistants to be overworked. The teaching assistants along with tutors and readers are protected by a union contract but enforcement of the contract can be tedious.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve the communication between student workers and administration. The current environment often becomes hostile and defensive very quickly.
