    Pros

Great environment to work in. Over the course of my 5 years there they have become like a second family. Great way to meet the faculty, staff and students.

    Cons

Management could use some work, there is a lot of discord between the upper management and middle management which trickles down to the student workers.

I have been working at UC Merced

    Pros

The work is autonomous, very interesting, and fun to work on. Biggest difference between graduate school and post doc is no more course requirements and slightly more pay.

    Cons

Research in a bubble. Many people will not be able to easily understand what you work on. the work environment is probably too isolated.

    Advice to Management

Encourage/promote networking opportunities with industry. Networking should be more frequent then just the once a year conference.

    Pros

This organization is experiencing growth and is committed to establishing itself within the systems history of excellence. There is a lot of freedom to develop new ideas.

    Cons

The pay structure, on -boarding process, and communication structures are heinous and often unprofessional. Subordinates make more than their more experienced supervisors and there is no clear chain of command in many areas.

    Advice to Management

Get your people paid adequately and titled appropriately. The value of the employee should not be based on the value another company would place on them.

I have been working at UC Merced

    Pros

It is a new school therefore some aspects are still on development. The engineering buildings are new and helps the graduate students in the lab to focus on their work.

    Cons

Merced itself is a small and somewhat boring city to live in. Also for a graduate student in EECS there few options regarding classes.

    Pros

A lot of funding opportunities for graduate students. Even master student can find TAships and RAships.

    Cons

Located in a small town and the population if the students are not high.

    Advice to Management

Get more budget and build more building and try to attract more students and faculties.

    Pros

The Athletic Trainers were very flexible with my school and basketball schedule. They also understood the importance of academics as the first priority.

    Cons

Unfortunately, UC Merced's Intercollegiate Athletics Program is still new, which means fewer available work hours.
