UC Merced was a little rough around the edges especially in the beginning, but it still ended up being great.

    Pros

At UC Merced you end up being a big fish in a small pond rather than being a small fish in a big pond like most universities. As a researcher that means lots of equipment and attention. Also, more finding to go around. In Cognitive and Information Sciences, we usually got our number one pick of teaching assistant positions. Instructors of record were always conscious of your research demands and made the teaching responsibilities pretty basic.

    Cons

Sometimes there is a shortage of teaching assistants, which is usually unheard of at other universities. And because of this shortage it is possible for teaching assistants to be overworked. The teaching assistants along with tutors and readers are protected by a union contract but enforcement of the contract can be tedious.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve the communication between student workers and administration. The current environment often becomes hostile and defensive very quickly.

I have been working at UC Merced full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Faculty colleagues are incredible, dynamic, creative people, always going well beyond what is required to help build the first research university in California's Central Valley. There is a pioneering spirit at UC Merced that infuses all elements of faculty life: research, teaching, and service. The low teaching load gives you plenty of time to work on research. Low cost of living means that faculty salaries will actually enable you to buy a nice house and live well.

    Cons

Senior administration used to be very poor but has recently gone through a huge turnover. Faculty salaries do not even begin to do justice to the number of hours faculty actually work. Students are not always prepared to be at a UC campus. Infrastructure can be shoddy at times, e.g., power failures in buildings that house research equipment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increase faculty salary compensation. Increase amount of state funds available for research through internal proposals and competitions. Doing both of these things will make a huge difference in the quality of research faculty that the university will attract; this in turn will have huge benefits for the reputation and ranking of the university over the next 10+ years.

I worked at UC Merced part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

My co-workers were professional and helpful. We helped other out when needed, kind of like a family.

    Cons

Some of the residents or parents that called/came in were very upset at times and would not listen to what I was saying, even though I was answering their questions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Mix up the shifts so it is not the same people working the same shifts most of the time.

I have been working at UC Merced part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great hours, great support with staff and co-workers. Overall a great experience. The time I spent working for the Police Department was one that I am proud of. The department itself strives to maintain a high level of professionalism and courtesy to the public.

    Cons

The only con I can think of is the fact that you sometimes are on call and during finals week that can put a strain on your studies, but that is the job in which you signed up for. Protecting the public is a 24/7 365 job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow for a greater sense of cohesiveness. Have more group activities so that the office can really get to know each other.
