I have been working at UC Riverside as an intern for more than a year

    Pros

Great experience for student workers to learn in a work environment that is highly supportive and seeks to help the students gain new skills. Working at the OCAE office helped me alot both personally and professionaly, sadly the office has been downsized in recent years but it's created a more cozy enviroment.

    Cons

Working with other students can be a bit stressful at times . Sometimes there were students who just weren't willing to put in the work for their applications or when they wanted to withdraw past deadlines they became mad if we tried to tell them it was too late to withdraw fee free. Notable incident was one student trying to blame everyone else but herself for the latter incident.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management in the OCAE office is great albeit the chain of command is very vague and none of the student workers actually knew who to answer to

I have been working at UC Riverside part-time for more than a year

    Pros

As a student, it is convenient to have a job located at your school. The pay is not bad, I make $10/thour for screening movies. But it's only a 3 hour job, sometimes the movie won't last that long, so I'll make $10 or $20 per week.

    Cons

The people in charge of payroll are not always on top of their work and don't always answer your e-mails in an appropriate time manner. It is also difficult to land a job at school. Most of the jobs on campus are work-study only, and when you're "too rich for work study" that does affect your chances at landing a job. Even when you have work-study, the competition is fierce. I applied to several jobs my freshman year of college only to get rejected due to lack of experience, the same situation applied throughout the next three years. How was I to land a job, when no one wanted to give me a chance. Eventually, I did manage to get a job, one that did not require an interview. One of my professors needed someone to be a projectionist for his class, so I asked for the job and got it.

I worked at UC Riverside full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Fantastic people, great place to work. Everyone is usually helpful in working together and communicating.

    Cons

Multi-tasking and wearing "many hats" necessary. Promotional opportunities limited with a preference on brown-nosing. Transparent communication from leadership and management needs improvement.

I worked at UC Riverside full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Most of the people who work at UCR are interesting, friendly, and committed. A lot depends on who your boss is, but most are very flexible and accommodating, and generally people who do a good job get recognized (though perhaps not monetarily). Leadership has generally been pretty sensible, at least in the post-Chancellor-Cordova era. Great benefits, too.

    Cons

You probably won't make as much at UCR as at a private company, particularly if you're hired immediately after graduating. Less-qualified people who are brought in from the outside will make more than people who have been around a long time; sometimes the only way to get a raise is to leave.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Because you'll never be able to reward staff monetarily as much as they might deserve, find other ways to instill loyalty in your best employees.
