I had a great experience as an intern at Perlman Rehabilitation Clinic

I have been working at UC San Diego Health System

    Pros

Great staff, therapists take time with patients and with you as an intern, opportunities to use different modalities like TENs, basic anatomy instruction from therapist, will take students with no experience

    Cons

Sometimes have to do menial paperwork or "projects" that involve tedious computer work

I have been working at UC San Diego Health System full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Great benefits and work/life balance for those working in administrative departments. Caring and involved CEO.

    Cons

Constant change in department direction leaves employees having to abandon projects/pick up new projects on a whim. Promotions and raises are few and far between.

I have been working at UC San Diego Health System

    Pros

Co-workers are extremely friendly and do not treat you like a student worker. They truly care about your opinions and try to incorporate you into company meetings. The student hours are very accommodating of your class schedule/exams.

    Cons

Some workers do not really put in the effort to work. They do not do much and are waiting for their pension.

I have been working at UC San Diego Health System as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

If you're a women, you can sit all day without doing work and you can collect your paycheck. The workplace has a relatively high percentage of women workers.
The workplace is pretty good at work life balance

    Cons

Men are expected to work harder than anyone else. Its sexism that I've never experienced before.
Gossip is rampant. You can hear it in the halls.
Condescending Bosses. They are imcompetent and try to push hard tasks onto the workers in hopes of never being caught.
Supervisors expect an unheard-of level of performance while the managers browse Facebook and Craigslist 75% of the time.
Incompetency is rampant and noone really cares about their work.
The people are liberal but there is a strict conservative workplace.
    Promotions are non existent.
People are paid too little with the promise of pension.
Too many old people waiting to retire to collect pension. They drive the culture downward.
HR fired people due to technicality without a 2 week notice. Once there is something remotely wrong, you're out on the street.
Even department managers have no say when it comes to dealing with HR.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fire your supervisors and hire some competent employees that actually care about AIDS Research and not about making a paycheck.

    Pros

Health System is focused on improving.

    Cons

Many people just stay put for the pension and give little effort. Dead weight is not easily eliminated. For that reason, it is hard to move up.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Acknowledge and compensate the hard-working, well-qualified employees.

    Pros

Great place to work at. It's a state job with excellent benefits (medical, free dental and vision), an excellent Retirement package (403b and UCRP), great colleagues, and a CEO that cares about his employees.

    Cons

    None that I know of.

    Pros

Friendly employees, good benefits, interesting work environment where you learn a lot

    Cons

Low pay, overworked, poor morale, non-existent leadership, very political "top heavy" organization, management does not support its staff or empower them; no advancement and no pay increases - ever.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start looking out for your staff and the people that are actually caring for patients.
