I have been working at UC San Diego Health System full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great place to work at. It's a state job with excellent benefits (medical, free dental and vision), an excellent Retirement package (403b and UCRP), great colleagues, and a CEO that cares about his employees.

    Cons

    None that I know of.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I worked at UC San Diego Health System full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Friendly employees, good benefits, interesting work environment where you learn a lot

    Cons

Low pay, overworked, poor morale, non-existent leadership, very political "top heavy" organization, management does not support its staff or empower them; no advancement and no pay increases - ever.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start looking out for your staff and the people that are actually caring for patients.

I have been working at UC San Diego Health System full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Work-life balance possible depending on the "needs of the unit" and favoritism. Benefits are among the best I have reviewed in healthcare. Specifically, rate of pay superior to most other hospitals in San Diego, multiple health plan to choose from (although the size is reducing), short and long term disability available, employer paid dental and vision benefits and pension available to career staff. However, employee contribution (for nurses at least) has increased significantly with the last union contract (averaging $200 per pay period) which has led to a significant pay cut in reality.

    Cons

Very negative nursing management, creating a hostile work environment. Team work not valued. High staff turn over.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Senior nursing management (above unit level) should keep a closer eye on unit nursing managers and investigate why staff turn over is so high. Encourage a positive team spirit which will reflect positively on patient and staff satisfaction.

I worked at UC San Diego Health System as an intern (more than an year)

    Pros

Friendly, nice, passionate, and intelligent, team-driven medical professionals. Also great mentors to volunteers, interns, and medical students. Very clean environment to work in. Patients are treated very well.

    Cons

Some of the nurses are not very friendly. Parking requires fee, especially for volunteers representing from UCSD campus laboratory but working at the Medical Center. Location is a bit far from UCSD campus.
