I have been working at UC San Diego Health System full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

They pay the best and the doctors are great to work with.

    Cons

Paying for parking is not unheard of but it is very expensive here. Yes, for employees too. $80 per month for unlimited pass.

I have been working at UC San Diego Health System part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Very nice working atmosphere with very friendly employees and supervisors. Everyone is very understanding and are very helpful. The software projects are not too difficult but can give a challenge to unfamiliar programmers. There are also other projects that involves non-programming skills.

    Cons

You will need to be motivated in order to put out good work. You will need to be assertive to get new tasks and new projects to work on.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Depending on the student, it would be very good to have small projects from time to time to assess the skill level of the student worker.

I have been working at UC San Diego Health System full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The benefits are incomparable. The best I've seen anywhere. You pay next to nothing for medical, dental and vision. They also give you free legal assistance and more.

    Cons

Internal people to UCSD know that two divisions that you don't want to go to are Cancer Research and Pediatrics. They have high turnover and are not managed well.
Internal systems are cumbersome, causing it to take a long time to get simple things done.

Certain people seem to be favored. Not all employees are treated with respect. An environment where many people talk about each other behind their backs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The culture needs and overhaul. It's not a nice place to work, overall.

    Work on implementing the following:
        Employee empowerment
        Teamwork
        Two way open communications
        Top management support
        Respect for the individual
        Fairness and Justice
        Equality
        Transparency in Decision Making
        Employee Morale

I have been working at UC San Diego Health System full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great ability to work on a lot of different types of projects. Job growth available in all areas. Management really listens to input from all levels of employees.

    Cons

Parking is always an issue but space is limited so it is understandable.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep listening to all levels of employees for input. Get out on the units and departments and interact with all staff.

I have been working at UC San Diego Health System

    Pros

The Senior Management is avery good group to work with. My direct reports is great and treats me extremely well. Not a micro-manager, encourages growth and risk taking.

    Cons

C- Suite Leadership has been in a fairly constant state of flux. People leave for good things, but it clearly creates challenges regarding continuity of direction and expectation. Directors and managers have too few incentives.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make the same commitment to management staff as to union staff. Salary increases for union staff are significant 3-6% c. every six months this contract. Management? Once in three years, 3%

    Pros

Frontier academic medicine with unlimited resource of knowledge database.

    Cons

Large percentage of work is paperwork related, not necessarily direct patient care

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When will you stop asking us to adjust to and/or implement new job functions to stack on to those that we already have?

    Pros

We have a lot of freedom to do the job how we see fit. Sometims any way. sometimes we get micromanaged by people who think they're smart but really are not.

    Cons

Dr's nurses and administrators treat you like scum bag. There is no professional development or feedback, or training

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do inservices on things that will give us a better understanding of our role and how to perform better. Help us understand the perspective of the physician and nursing staff, and help them understand our perspective.
