Pros
Great benefits, nice coworkers, great environment. You have to work hard and always be innovative there. You need to look around for promotional opportunities.
Cons
Not many cons, the uc retirement package was in trouble and with the state budget crisis there were pay cuts. That is always hard on moralle.
Pros
cutting edge science, lots of work to do
Cons
typical political shenanigans like all public-sector jobs. Lots of clock-punchers.
Pros
Fantastic research, and amazing brains on that research
Lots of money coming in due to UCSD's place in research world
Lots of conveniences on campus: tons of food, coffee, post office, etc...
Job stability - because it's almost impossible to get fired.
Cons
I have to pay $80 a month for parking?
Awful, awful chance for promotions and raises: breeding of apathy due to this
Huge bureaucracy, along with apathetic workers = everything take forever
Too many below average workers still getting paid because getting fired is extremely difficult
Advice to Senior Management
Work to create an environment of growth - most people who want to contribute more are stuck because of raise/promotions rules and regulations. End result? The good ones migrate to industry.
Pros
Great benefits.one of the few companies with a pension. Cutting edge medical research and science, great lcation and close to the ocean
Cons
Not a lot of diversity in work/practical experience. Large population of the staff graduate from UCSD and work there their entire careers.
Advice to Senior Management
Need more diversity in key positions from outside of the University. This will help in building for the future as CA continues to face budget cuts.
Pros
The fun people that work here and the relaxing environment are some of the best reasons to work at the Rady School of Management.
Cons
The downsides to working at the Rady School of Management is that it can fluctuate in the workload here. It would get very busy at times and then not busy at all at others.
Pros
My positions is very flexible and I get to work with instruments that few people will have the opportunity to work with.
Cons
I'm not sure where my current work will lead me. My position may not be typical, ever lab is different but I usually work allow with very little input from my supervisor.
Advice to Senior Management
More group meetings and a willingness to help researcher advance in the career.
Pros
People are really nice and always ready to teach you the things that you want to learn about their jobs.
Cons
Work can be monotonous and dull after a while.
Pros
predictable schedules and on-campus location are great for grad students; SD weather is unbeatable; weekly on-campus farmers market; have some flexibility in what u present in classroom; good training for TAs; good feedback and student surveys help TAs improve
Cons
supervisors are hit and miss; some can be so gossipy in team meetings that it's a waste of time to sit through them (but you're paid to be there so there's not much you can do but tolerate it or try to change subjects); high levels of student stress can weigh on TAs who actually care about their pupils
Advice to Senior Management
decent TA experience overall but TAs shouldn't have to sit and listen to supervisor's gossip/political preferences/ general pettiness. we're paid to teach not be a sounding board for someone who has a PhD but few manners to go with it. it's just plain poor management.
Pros
Pension plan if you work for more than 5 years
Great Medical insurance package
Laid back atmosphere
Convenient location
Many interesting people
Cons
Pay is a joke and no raises in sight.
Employees have to pay $95/mo for parking, but parking spots are not guaranteed. You have to look for spots just like students do.
Faculty is the king. They report to no one do whatever they want and treat people like garbage. School administration does not care.
No promotions. You have to apply and interview for every position.
No money for hardware upgrades, most of the equipment is outdated.
Advice to Senior Management
I've seen more people leave this place than get hired. People are leaving because they get much better pay elsewhere. Future security is great, but what good does it do when you can't afford to pay your bills right now?
Pros
Large publishing community, good collaboration opportunities
Cons
Very poor interpersonal relationships, extremely poor diversity
