A large, cumbersome institution; depending on your Dept./team, etc., it could be awesome or pure frustration.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    San Francisco, CA

ProsBenefits are good and at least in my case the work/life balance was solid; the majority of your co-workers will be great. Amazing research and innovation in the life sciences.

ConsA huge organization which is not very agile; it takes tremendous effort to move anything forward. Inevitable politics and egos. A sizeable number of middle managers could be let go and it would not be noticed - plus the $$ saved would be considerable. Little to no training for administrative staff.

Advice to Senior ManagementInterim Chancellor Hawgood is certainly up to the task of being Chancellor, although a search is on to find the successor to Susan Desmond-Hellmann. That search will take months, as the target candidate pool is probably not a large one, and allegedly there should be some sort of sizzle factor to the choice.

    Horrible PIs

    SRA II (Current Employee)

ProsGood people, good opportunities because of the university name

ConsPsychopath PIs who barely show up to work. Extremely sexist and racist workplace with terrible human resources.

Advice to Senior ManagementWell most of them really shouldn't be managing people.

    Good flexibility, benefits, diverse culture

    Director (Current Employee)
    San Francisco, CA

ProsGreat benefits, flexible schedule including telecommute options. Lots of opportunities to continue training and personal development, if you can find a way to carve out time to take advantage of these offerings.

ConsTends to have unclear promotion structure for administrative roles, and somewhat flat salaries. Currently understaffed in many areas, which has had an impact on overall moral.

Advice to Senior ManagementFind ways to recognize what staff are doing well - positive culture can do a lot towards making up for being overworked etc.
