    Postdoctoral Scholar at UCSF

    Postdoctoral Fellow (Current Employee)
    San Francisco, CA

    ProsLots going on.
Some departments are growing - for example neuro

ConsNo money... have to get a grant to stay there, and almost impossible to get a grant.
Nothing changes... same ppl do almost the same studies over and over.

Advice to Senior ManagementFund more, allow more grants to be submitted, more resources for young investigators.

    A very pleasant working environment

Staff Research Associate III (Former Employee)
    San Francisco, CA

ProsThe lab I worked for was really what made this job one of my favorites so far. They were like my family away from home. As long as we got our work done, we could take a long lunch or leave early every once in a while. Working at a world class research institute also led to six publications in 4 years. Plus I'm still being cited on new papers even though I left 2.5 years ago. There are also many opportunities to attend medical/health seminars and network with the medical school, receive scholarships for continuing education, and collaborate with other departments.

ConsAs with any lab job, the work can get monotonous. I felt like I mastered most of my responsibilities after 1 year. But this also gave me more time to expand my role, improve procedures and protocols, organize, be involved in the grant writing process, and learn more about the research itself (not just the bench work). Because of this, I received a promotion from SRA I to SRA II after 1.5 years.

UCSF is terrible working environment unless you are a manager

    Analyst II (Former Employee)
    San Francisco, CA

Pros- UCSF is a well known school

Cons- Upper management could care less about staff
    - Terrible human resource staff
    - Few opportunities for growth in the academic environment if you are staff because PI's want to keep the money to themselves

Advice to Senior Management- Start appreciating staff, regardless of their status in the workplace

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

    Staff Research Associate

    Staff Research Associate (Current Employee)
    San Francisco, CA

ProsGood learning environment to kick-start your career. Be sure to find a good mentor to follow and try to learn as much as you can. There is wiggle room to take on different task due to the academia environment.

ConsLittle to no room for growth. Senior management does not care or see the hierarchy of new and old employees. Some employees will just sit there the entire day and do nothing while others are scrambling to finish the work.

Advice to Senior ManagementHave a better over sight on your staff members and be sure everyone is adequately trained.

    Amazing people, poor work-life balance.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    San Francisco, CA

ProsSmart, dedicated and high achieving people. Decent benefits. A mission that feels important.

ConsYou can get the best annual reviews possible, but don't expect a promotion, or raise or good work-life balance. What you will get is more and more work and less and less support to do it. When someone leaves their job, they won't hire a new person, they just make someone left behind do two people's (or more) job. And pay here is crap.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop making all of us do more than one job description. Support promotions and raises. The second I can get a better position somewhere else, I'm outta here.

    Excellent Opportunities for Professional Development

    Administrative Assistant III (Former Employee)
    San Francisco, CA

ProsProfessional development opportunities are encouraged, good salary, collaboration among different levels at the hospital, the feeling that you are making a difference

ConsI was there during Operational Excellence and I wasn't effected but many of my co-workers were upset by the changes that caused.

Advice to Senior ManagementThere was a mentorship program that you couldn't enter until you had been at UCSF for more than a year. I had to seek out my own mentors for advice and guidance when I first got there.

Smart people, beautiful and fun city, not enough money or time

    Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Current Employee)
    San Francisco, CA

ProsThe research environment is really stimulating and collaborative. There are always great seminars and new postdocs coming from other places to befriend and/or learn from. The faculty are all really passionate about doing good science, and it makes for a great training environment. In addition, there are numerous bay area science & technology events to attend.

ConsIt is incredibly expensive to live in San Francisco and UCSF does not account for the cost of living - salaries here for postdocs and graduate students are the same as they are in Nashville, TN, for example. Also, because the training environment is so top-notch, and the state of funding in science is so dire, many PIs are stressed and many people work 60-90 hours a week.
