I have been working at UC Santa Barbara full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Work with young, ambitious kids who are working toward their dreams. Also experienced, professional, well-educated professors who do extraordinary work. All while living at the beach and enjoying the beautiful, well-maintained campus.

    Cons

24/7 construction, parking is limited, and IV can be dangerous.

I worked at UC Santa Barbara as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Great mentoring, good pay, plenty of learning experiences. Hands on lab work/real world experience, something uncommon for someone without a HS degree to be afforded. 9-5 work schedule, with flexibility.

    Cons

Lab is not exactly action packed, there is wait time during experiment runs, not ideal if you like to be constantly in motion.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Mentors are great, but program director is disconnected with interns, and at times condescending.

I worked at UC Santa Barbara full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Laid back atmosphere, good health and retirement benefits. My supervisor allowed me a lot of freedom and independence in my work and I found it very rewarding. Being at a top research university meant that there were a lot of seminars held, so I got to hear about other interesting work being done in my field.

    Cons

Bureaucracy was sometimes difficult to deal with, and it often took longer than necessary to get things like paperwork done. Not much room for advancement for positions like mine.

I worked at UC Santa Barbara part-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Very good collaboration between departments. The engineering and physics department are world class and they bring amazing tools to some of the biological problems

    Cons

    The biology department is small.

I have been working at UC Santa Barbara part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

University is one that strives to value diversity and inclusiveness on campus.

Collaboration, teamwork are highly valued in most departments.

    Generous benefits.

Cannot possibly beat the location, views of the ocean and mountains.

    Cons

Organizational climate can vary greatly from department to department.

Some faculty are challenging to work with. There are clearly delineated unequal power dynamics between faculty and staff and more clearly seen in some departments, while less so in others.

Limited opportunities to advance and for salary increases.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Create more integration between staff and faculty.

I worked at UC Santa Barbara as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Extremely friendly and helpful colleagues who were genuinely interested in their research topics. Excellent work-life balance and opportunities to socialize within the department. Advisor was excellent and extremely knowledgeable in his field. Good living stipend.

    Cons

Advising could have been more hands-on at times. Santa Barbara is fairly expensive and you'll need a car if you want to spend any time in the more active downtown.
