My time here was both laid back yet very rewarding.

    Assistant II (Former Employee)
    Santa Barbara, CA

ProsThe upper management works around your schedule. They are very accommodating to student lifestyle. The University Center work is very easy and not very challenging as a college job.

ConsThe management is very inexperienced as far as leadership is concerned. There is not much room for growth as most jobs at the University Center are for students. The job can get quite boring at times

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't take advantage or disrespect workers because they are students.

    Great department, world class research

    Graduate Student Researcher (Current Employee)
    Santa Barbara, CA

ProsIndependent research is excellent and opportunities to discuss chemistry with excellent researchers. Campus is beautiful, and the hours, while long, are very flexible to your schedule. Activities are available to balance work and social life.

ConsExpensive place to live in the area and depending on your PI work hours can be long, especially in the organic chemistry division.

A beachside workplace where the beauty masks the downsides

    Research Assistant (Former Employee)
    Santa Barbara, CA

ProsGreat benefits, mostly great people. They have a lack of accountability of staff and I think that affects moral.

ConsThe area is expensive to live. It has the downsides of any public institution with funding issues, varying abilities among staff, and leadership issues. People are willing to overlook a lot because of the location

    Great experience, if occasionally frustrating

    Teaching Assistant (Former Employee)
    Santa Barbara, CA

Prosgood experience, good union for teaching assistants and university employees, all of the professors I have worked with were great to work with, very willing to listen

Consnot a lot of positions open so it was hard to get placement, the university limits you to 12 quarters TAing, the students often seem like they are more there to party than to learn

The best lesson that they will teach you is hypocrisy.

    Graduate Student Researcher (Former Employee)
    Santa Barbara, CA

ProsNice weather and a relatively clean work environment. A lot of diversity in the people and work opportunities. Flexible schedule opportunities if you are not admin staff.

ConsPeople are petty, deceitful, and manipulative. The managers are a bunch of con-men, liars, and overall skid marks who only care about themselves and their own success even at the cost of others quality of life.

Advice to Senior ManagementWalk the talk. Do the right thing for all the people and not just for yourself.

    Great location, great people

    Postdoctoral Fellow (Current Employee)
    Santa Barbara, CA

ProsUCSB promotes highly collaborative environment among STEM people. Location is wonderful. Health insurance is the best in the area. Santa Barbara is the best place on Earth to live!

ConsSanta Barbara is quite expensive place to live, which is not really reflected in postdoc salaries. Budget cuts for research is reflected on low rate of new hires.
