I have been working at UCLA Extension full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Benefits are competitive Great people Opportunity to make a difference Ability to move up in the company

    Cons

Years without pay raises High turnover Bureaucracy makes everything difficult Lack of transparency from upper management Zero "perks" outside of benefits

    Advice to Management

The company has incredible potential and a lot of great employees. Raise salaries to retain talent and give bonuses for company milestones. Make decisions with employees in mind, not just increased company earnings. Allow telecommuting for more positions. Return to mission statement and values.

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at UCLA Extension part-time

    Pros

If you are on top of your career, you can fully exert your talents for teaching at UNEX. I have taught 4 courses here, and find it has a good audience. Students and professionals; vey diverse.

    Cons

Does not pay well; actually it is underpaid. $2,000 for a Course.

    Advice to Management

Raise the pay for the Instructors.

I worked at UCLA Extension part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

As a work study student I had very flexible hours and management was willing to work with me. Pay, although only through work study, was very good. Relaxing work environment As a UCLA Undergraduate, I didn't receive a lot of academic exposure to UCLA Extension. Once assigned tasks I was able to learn more about UCLA Extension and how it functions. After learning more about Extension and some of its certificate programs I see the value it has, especially for non-traditional students and graduates looking for specialties in their fields.

    Cons

There was a lot of downtime because of not having available tasks, due to the nature of just being an assistant. After work-study depleted I wasn't able to work there anymore.

I have been working at UCLA Extension full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Flexible with time-off procedure, genuine people that really care. The continuing education culture is encouraged, great resources to learn from

    Cons

Since it's truly difficult to be fired here once you become a Career Employee, some employees/departments proceed at a snails pace, not efficient and "Pass the Buck" mentality can exist here. Since last year we hired a new Dean Smutz and his new vision and style of leadership is something that I appreciate. We will see how his vision and plans are carried out this year. Pay is minimum.

    Advice to Management

Provide an environment that encourages personnel to grow, develop, and not micro-manage.

    Pros

    Excellent colleagues and working environment.

    Cons

Bureaucracy and average compensation but great benefits.

    Advice to Management

Monitor performance and base salaries on it.

I have been working at UCLA Extension full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Flexible schedules depending on the supervisor, great benefits, decent co-workers, interesting programs.

    Cons

few raises if any, minimal opportunities for growth/promotion

I worked at UCLA Extension full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

UCLA Extension hires some great staff members, provides solid benefits, and offers a long (albeit unpaid) holiday break. I made some great friends while working here and learned a lot

    Cons

The pay is relatively low (state budgets), some of the middle managers are very bitter people who do not seem to respect those around them, and there is very little room for growth (in part because many people have worked here for 20+ years -- which I supposed speaks well of the company)

    Advice to Management

try to respect others a little more, don't make your employees feel quite so much like wage slaves.

  11. Well organized and great teachers and staff.

I have been working at UCLA Extension part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

It's very well organized. The other teachers are all very interesting and dedicated.

    Cons

The salary is low and if you are an hourly instructor your hours are restricted so UCLA doesn't have to pay benefits.

    Advice to Management

Teachers are stressed because there is no way to make more money at UCLA Extension. Meanwhile, the Extension makes megabucks off of the teachers' hard labor.
