Work Study student as an assistant

    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee
    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee

I worked at UCLA Extension part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

As a work study student I had very flexible hours and management was willing to work with me.
Pay, although only through work study, was very good.
    Relaxing work environment
As a UCLA Undergraduate, I didn't receive a lot of academic exposure to UCLA Extension. Once assigned tasks I was able to learn more about UCLA Extension and how it functions. After learning more about Extension and some of its certificate programs I see the value it has, especially for non-traditional students and graduates looking for specialties in their fields.

    Cons

There was a lot of downtime because of not having available tasks, due to the nature of just being an assistant.
After work-study depleted I wasn't able to work there anymore.

I have been working at UCLA Extension as a contractor (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Students are generally professional and take courses seriously. UNEX respects its instructors and provides good administrative support. Excellent technical staff for online course development. Instructors have the opportunity to take UNEX courses tuition-free and attend other day-long teaching development workshops.

    Cons

Very low pay for adjunct teaching. They require a commitment from the instructor at least a semester in advance, but don't always advertise these same classes.

I have been working at UCLA Extension full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Flexible with time-off procedure, genuine people that really care. The continuing education culture is encouraged, great resources to learn from

    Cons

Since it's truly difficult to be fired here once you become a Career Employee, some employees/departments proceed at a snails pace, not efficient and "Pass the Buck" mentality can exist here. Since last year we hired a new Dean Smutz and his new vision and style of leadership is something that I appreciate. We will see how his vision and plans are carried out this year. Pay is minimum.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide an environment that encourages personnel to grow, develop, and not micro-manage.

I worked at UCLA Extension full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

UCLA Extension hires some great staff members, provides solid benefits, and offers a long (albeit unpaid) holiday break. I made some great friends while working here and learned a lot

    Cons

The pay is relatively low (state budgets), some of the middle managers are very bitter people who do not seem to respect those around them, and there is very little room for growth (in part because many people have worked here for 20+ years -- which I supposed speaks well of the company)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

try to respect others a little more, don't make your employees feel quite so much like wage slaves.

I have been working at UCLA Extension part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

It's very well organized. The other teachers are all very interesting and dedicated.

    Cons

The salary is low and if you are an hourly instructor your hours are restricted so UCLA doesn't have to pay benefits.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Teachers are stressed because there is no way to make more money at UCLA Extension. Meanwhile, the Extension makes megabucks off of the teachers' hard labor.

I have been working at UCLA Extension part-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

I have been an Adjunct Professor with UCLA Extension for more than 20 years. The staff continually goes the extra mile to assure the best possible educational environment, technologically, logistically and every other way. They do an outstanding job.

    Cons

The success of a class is a combination of presenting the relevant information in an embraceable, understandable and digestible format while making sure the students remember the joy of learning. That ain't easy.

    Keep up the great work.

I worked at UCLA Extension full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

You get amazing benefits working for UCLA Ext. Full medical, dental, and vision!
I met the most amazing people working here. They hire wonderful people.
There are opportunities for advancement, and people tend to advance quickly if they work hard. Many people who work here have been there for a decade or longer!

    Cons

They pay isn't great (it's not awful, but it could be better)
The work can be very emotionally taxing, especially when interacting with students.
They make you PAY to park at your own place of employment! ($65/month)
Some of the upper management is callous, they will not listen to employee concerns or frustrations with the work environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A little more transparency and access would really improve everyone's quality of life at this workplace. People don't truly feel that they can express their concerns openly.
