Pros
awesome place to work. You will love it here. very tough to get though. if you know some prof makes easier
Cons
You have to work very hard. mostly your day will go far beyond the typical 8 to 5 day shift
Advice to Senior Management
I no advice for you guys. You guys are doing a wonderful job everyday. redefining the the norm and improving life
Pros
Hours were good, people were friendly, pretty easy job, not much training is required, met a lot of cool people.
Cons
Supervisors were sometimes incompetent and inconsistent, the highest levels of management weren't really involved with what went on a regular basis, it's a night job so if you can't stay up late, don't bother applying.
Advice to Senior Management
You must be a night person to do this job. The hours are from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
It's very hard to get promoted from your entry-level position as positions are limited and supervisors rarely leave unless they have to. You don't have much say in how supervisors deal with specific situations.
Pros
Access to resources and experts in the field
Cons
low salary and too much politics
Advice to Senior Management
none
Pros
Benefits are fantastic and reasonably priced. Work/life balance is the best I've seen--rarely is overtime expected or even needed. And the job is relatively stable.
Cons
In one word: management. The middle management level is completely bloated, and managers seem to be long-time employees rather than expert leaders. (I realize the two aren't mutually exclusive, but in my area, they seem to be.) Management knows less than employees and, because of their ensuing insecurity, doesn't provide staff with the appropriate latitude to do their jobs. Even the more competent managers lack vision and leadership. If you chafe at being supervised by someone who doesn't have the ability and knowledge to do your job, then UCLA External Affairs is decidedly NOT for you.
Also: bureaucracy and its ensuing inefficiencies can be problematic.
Advice to Senior Management
Clear out the middle managers who've been at UCLA forever and who don't have the requisite skills. Management should trust employees to do their jobs instead of acting out of insecurity.
Pros
Flexibility, academic environment, chance to take classes
Cons
Low chance for raise, heavy work load
Advice to Senior Management
Need to give more incentives
Pros
Nice-looking campus, benefits and retirement pension, job security, good work-life balance.
Cons
As a public institution, there is no innovation or newness within the office; neither the aesthetics nor general operations.
Advice to Senior Management
Make the top-down vertical hierachy less harsh. It promotes passing the buck to the underlings and is an inefficient model.
Pros
If you love college athletics this is a great place to start. Its a great work environment and everyone is extremely nice. Great place to learn and develop strong interpersonal skills.
Cons
The pay is not the best because its a public university. There is an opportunity for growth but can sometimes be limited.
Advice to Senior Management
This is a great opportunity and provides an abundance of insight into college athletics. The athletic department is well organized.
Pros
My employer was extremely flexible about changes in my schedule when personal issues (ie finals) came up.
Cons
The pay isn't great and the job was definitely not too challenging.
Advice to Senior Management
Great job! Everyone knows the standards aren't too high because it's a student job. However, it was still fun and comfortable.
Pros
Very flexible hours, good pay, nice staff
Cons
Have to sell things, work outside, weekly team meetings
Advice to Senior Management
Be more flexible with trainings
Pros
Compensation w/r/t the type of work being done (dishwashing) including the hourly wages (and vacation + holiday pay), benefits package, free meals, and flexibility of scheduling. Personable and helpful management. High employee morale.
Cons
Truthfully speaking, there are few organizational shortcomings beyond the nature of the labor itself. Scrubbing pots and sanitizing silverware over two consecutive shifts (13 hours) may be too much to ask of some.
Advice to Senior Management
Please continue doing what you've been doing for so many years, because you're doing a terrific job motivating your workforce and getting things done.
