    Assistant Project Scientist (Current Employee)

Prosthe general environment is good and people there are nice. the facility is advanced and their work-life balance is good. the campus is beautiful and is 5 min walk to beach.

Consthe pay is not so good but it might is due to the whole industry. nevertheless you have to work really hard to get things published.

An environment of innovative thinking and collaboration

    Nanotechnology Research Intern (Current Employee)
    La Jolla, CA

Pros-Most researchers/scientists working there are more than willing to help with any questions/materials
-The cancer center has a multitude of research equipment available for use (training is offered as well)
    -Clean environment

Cons-Not all research equipment is up-to-date
-Lacks a dining area/place to buy food (the cafe is not that great, but you can walk to the neighboring Thornton hospital and they have a quality cafeteria there)
-Some lab/research areas are usually disorganized due to the volume of research materials/tools/reagents

    SRAII

    SRAII (Former Employee)
    La Jolla, CA

ProsThere are a lot of MD/PhD's doing research, and you will get a behind the scene look at how physician scientists work to translate laboratory science into drugs and treatments. You will also get exposure to and gain knowledge in topics in translational and clinical biomedical research from weekly seminars and talks from visiting scientists. The Center recently acquired a few big shots in the field of personalized medicine and angiogenesis. It is poised to further the science and ambitious about improving outcome for patients.

ConsAs an SRA in most, if not all, academic institutes in the life sciences, your pay will increase incrementally over time and with years of experience but no career development/advancement to speak of unless you have a PhD. Research is very result and goal oriented, some not necessarily the most sophisticated, cutting edge, and exploratory science. Logistics and infrastructure is not always the greatest because of bureaucracy. I have seen better research support from facility or core at some other research institutes.

Advice to Senior ManagementReplace incompetent but entrenched employees who can't do their job. Invest more in providing research support.
