    Good Place To Grow

I have been working at UMKC

    Pros

One of the best places for a student programmer to work on as a part timer. Other full time employees are very helpful and supportive. A great exposure to variety of projects with admin level privileges. You can learn as much as you can look

    Cons

Even though there seems to be a lot of projects work flow seems to be moving at a slow rate

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

One more part time job can bring on a lot of difference to work flow.

    I worked at UMKC part-time

    Pros

Pretty easy job, flexible with hours, great place to work if you're a student.

    Cons

Low pay, little room for advancement, arbitrary or disinterested supervisor tree.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Precise definition of roles.

I have been working at UMKC full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The people were great and the work was fulfilling on some levels. It seemed that once you got into the system they made room for you in another department if you didn't work out in your current position. There was a great pension program and the educational discount was wonderful.

    Cons

Performance management was non-existent and moral for potential high performers was very low. Compensation was well below the average for this area as well.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in a peformance management process and hold people accountable.

UMKC is a relaxed work environment with low stress and expectations. Unfortunately, monetary rewards are low as well.

I worked at UMKC full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Work-life balance is a plus when working for UMKC. The lack of stress and demands in your work life allows you to devote your energy to home life.

    Cons

The biggest negative about a career at UMKC is the low pay in nearly every category of position. The extremely liberal and politicized environment can be difficult for anyone whose political views aren't in line with the far left.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management should value employees more than buildings. Take some of the millions spent each year on impressive new buildings and start paying rates that will attract and keep talented people.

I worked at UMKC full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Broad range of students - some brilliant, others not well prepared academically. Students are pleasant - not the entitlement mentality you sometimes see at top-tier schools. Nice collaboration across different parts of the campus. Becoming more prominent because of location in Kansas City. Nice library renovation, new business school building. Compensation and benefits are competitive.

    Cons

This school is underfunded - they've had some success attracting wealthy donors, but they need much more. The lesser-prepared undergrad students hold back the others, and also contribute to a less-than ideal graduation rate. The school should think about being more selective and/or providing more remedial and supportive students to students.

I worked at UMKC part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Although I was a lowly grad student, UMKC gave me full autonomy over the courses I taught. I was able to design the course, write the syllabus, choose all the readings, set the attendance policy, etc.--really everything that full professors do. In the meantime, there was no administrative interference, yet plenty of help when I needed it. A great experience over all. I learned a lot about teaching.

    Cons

I had to share an office with three other student teachers, which might be common practice, but I still felt apologetic when students would come in and find like four teachers in there--who were often visiting students of their own.
