I have been working at UMKC full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Plenty of time off, flexible work schedule, discount tuition for UMKC, centered near great restaurants and shopping, positive impact on the Kansas City community

    Cons

There is presently a soft freeze, so not every position is guaranteed to be replaced, we have also recently had some bad publicity regarding the Bloch School

    Don't expect a decent salary

I have been working at UMKC full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

You do get a decent amount of vacation and sick time along with personal days. If you want to earn a degree you can received reduced tuition rates.

    Cons

The pay starts low and stays that way. Raises are only given every other year and then they are only 2%. The only way to make a higher salary is to find a better paying position within the University but it's nearly impossible to move up. Parking is very expensive for employes and you often have to fight for a spot with the students. $42 is the cheapest rate and it goes up depending on your salary. You do not feel appreciated as an employee. Management is ineffective and they withhold information from you. If we are not getting a raise, just say so. We are on a soft freeze, just tell us. It's worse finding out from other sources.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Money speaks volumes. We really need a decent raise. 2% is not enough. Make it easier for employes to move up. Pay for our parking or make it affordable. Listen to employees.

I have been working at UMKC

    Pros

    -Job autonomy
-75% tuition discount for employee, 50% discount for spouse (can be same sex) and dependents
    -Supportive health initiatives
-Salaried workers accrue 17-22 vacation days per year
    -Student interaction rewarding

    Cons

-Work load not equitable; some staff work well over 40 hours while others, often in leadership roles, work well under 40
-Administration just beneath Chancellor is embarrassingly dysfunctional
-Very little to no salary increases; start low, stay low-this causing low morale
-MU system recently reviewed all job titles/pay, hadn't since 1970's, most inequities not corrected

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-Clean house upstairs-it's obvious who needs to go and from which side of fence they reside
-Put students vs $ first and the rest will work out over time
-Good staff rarely stay past 2 years-leave due to low salaries and dysfunctional administration-the few who stay have low morale
-Reward staff who consistently get good reviews; tiny, occasional, across the board raises damage morale and give no incentive to excel

I worked at UMKC full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

International professors and student body; smaller university, but connected to 4 other university of Missouri schools; Kansas City has a nice mix of urban lifestyle, yet can be rural if you live further away.

    Cons

Pay may be moderate, but cost of living is much less; campus is spread out in the city with insufficient parking; no good commuter options; some crime throughout the area.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep bureaucracy minimal.
