    Doctoral student in social sciences

    Pros

If you have to be in a small town - Amherst/Northampton is the place to be! Large international grad student community.

    Cons

Some of the facilities are outdated. Teaching is not the priority for this R1 institution

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus more on quality of teaching and mentoring (both grad and undergrad)

    Pros

Friendly, supportive, education focused environment. Everyone really does care about the students and they seem to care about one another too!

    Cons

It is a little bureaucratic (hence the what you would expect, it is a state school!). Departments and divisions seem very distant. Definitely needs some work on the silo issue.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A half day orientation including a campus tour might be nice but overall the biggest concern is departmental cooperation.

Former Employee - UMASS Dining  in  Amherst, MA
Former Employee - UMASS Dining in Amherst, MA

    Pros

Lots of different types of job opportunities, lots of opportunity for laboratory work which usually pays the best. You could also work as a TA possibly or work as a office assistant, some potential to learn helpful stuff.

    Cons

Otherwise you will likely get minimum wage. Lots of useless jobs that no one else wants to do, especially dining services.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Care more about the students and they will care about the school.
