Advice to Senior ManagementCreate more positions- fire lackluster employees that barely do enough to get by.

It was an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in scientific research.

Research Assistant (Former Employee) Worcester, MA

ProsI had a huge amount of flexibility in my work hours, as well as helpful and thoughtful direction. It was a meaningful start for someone hoping to gain experience in scientific research, a field that is often difficult to gain entrance to. My mentors were always willing to coach me and answer questions, without being overbearing.

ConsIt's not easy work—it requires both physical and mental dexterity as well as a talent for multitasking. There is certainly a learning curve and the margin for careless errors is quite small. But such is the nature of working in science.

Talented people solving some of of public sector health care's most pressing problems.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsGreat on-the-job learning experience. Exposure to diverse skills and experience. People there care about helping people who are poor and disabled receive better services through the research, consulting, and policy development work that we do. Does not rely on any state tax money -- it earns its own way and then some. Profits are used to fund UMass Medical School, the parent organization.

ConsNot as competitive for public sector contracts as it once was. Private, for-profit firms are winning contracts that it used to receive.

Advice to Senior ManagementNeed executive leadership with private sector experience.

It was the best 5 years of my life as a graduate student there.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsThis is a place where some high quality research is performed on a day-to-day basis. Nobel laureates and world-renowned scientists have chosen to work here.

ConsThe city location seems to be a little isolated and far from Boston.

Stay far away from pharmacy services!

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsBenefits, coworkers are friendly and supportive

ConsManagement is inept, apathetic and unqualified for their positions. No support given to employees- you're on your own. Don't expect any professional growth here. Reliant on two companies as clients to survive.

Advice to Senior ManagementTrim the fat and get rid of managers who have ambiguous titles and don't contribute to the company. Find and develop managers who understand how to motivate and empower your employees. This is the reason 35+ employees have left this dept over the last two years.

Fine people to work with, hence good place to work.

Research Associate (Former Employee) Worcester, MA

ProsThe quality of your colleagues. The work is interesting. Will learn a lot in your field from talented people doing challenging work. Friendly, cooperative atmosphere. Chance to explore new, innovative ideas and methods.

ConsThe pay is not high. But that's usually the way in academia.

Advice to Senior ManagementIncrease salaries; provide more job security.
