I have been working at UMass Memorial Medical Center full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

New management has made a lot of positive changes. Ideas boards have been implemented and Dept. Managers are highly encouraged to help get their employees ideas put into place. Better IT systems being implemented. Benefits are great but the ACA is killing that.

    Cons

Exempt employees are part of a Pay for Performance plan however the pool of money for increases is so low that the increases do not even keep up with the cost of living. Non Union employees have the opportunity to work OT, Managers and above receive annual bonuses but the exempt employees are stuck working long hours with little hope of a decent increase at the end of the year. You can get an outstanding review and still get the same percentage increase and the person sitting next to you who does the bare minimum required of them. Exempt employees also lost vacation time permanently during budget cuts a few years ago. Non exempt only gave up time for one year and union employees did not have to give up any. We need to give employees incentive to work hard and move up in the organization.

    Advice to Management

Add a merit pool to the Pay for performance bucket so that employees who perform above and beyond can actually be paid for their performance. We were better off in the days of the 3% across the board increases!

I worked at UMass Memorial Medical Center full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

dedicated people good pay, beneftis some semblence of structure in work

    Cons

very autocratic management. too much micro management. Don't apply fairness rules across all employees. Some treated as favorites, others ignored or given more work. Too much fire fighting going on with IS. Continuous production issues in IS. Need a better system of accountability and quality control.

    Advice to Management

maybe a refresher in management school on more up to date methods of interacting and dealing with people. i.e. better people skills.

I have been working at UMass Memorial Medical Center (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great benifits, insurance is cost affective, 401 k. They have a decent pension plan as well. Sick Benifits are also good with good vacation time

    Cons

Lousy management. Seems that there are more in leadership rolls, and much less in staff. Need of more nurses and techs. Need more respect!

    Advice to Management

Have respect for all. Don't treat grown adults as children. Listen to concerns without a response of That's how it is now.

I worked at UMass Memorial Medical Center (More than a year)

    Pros

The only pros I can think of is the Union negotiates pay raises although the staff is really underpaid.

    Cons

Staff is micromanaged. The Management do not want to hear concerns or deal with any Issues that may Arise.

    Advice to Management

My advice to Management would be to stop wasting time on ridiculous petty Issues and start focusing on the bigger picture.

I have been working at UMass Memorial Medical Center part-time

    Pros

Manager is excellent at honoring requests for a day off.

    Cons

Negative upper administration that spends time looking to get rid of older staff by cutting necessary departments such as the IV team. Poor staffing, Unable to get an adequate break in order to recharge and provide excellent patient care. Feel overwhelmed most of the time and extremely stressed. Could never work full time here.

    Advice to Management

Hire more nurses. Provide adequate breaks to staff. Provide positive feedback to staff. Do something for the nurses during nurses week that makes the staff feel appreciated. No one wants to work in a negative environment that provides little positive feedback. Stop the take aways during contract renewals.

    Pros

UMASS offers a competitive pay scale, and excellent benefits. Working in a non-clinical department, you may still qualify for one of the unions present.

    Cons

Staff is under appreciated. The financial strains that management feels trickle down to their staff and effects their attitude. Management likes to pin coworkers against each other. Management talks down to their employees.

    Advice to Management

Encourage team work within the department. Show staff appreciation.

    Advice to Management

I have been working at UMass Memorial Medical Center (More than a year)

    Pros

They pay very well compared to the other hospitals in the area

    Cons

My department is terribly managed, the hospital is too big and things just don't get accomplished. My department is experiencing a lot of budget cuts so we often go without breaks.

    Advice to Management

    Listen to your employees!

    Pros

Some of the physicians are excellent, as are some of the nurses and CNA's. Many insurances accepted.

    Cons

Horrible electronic medical record system, not supportive of new nurses, people that repeatedly don't do their jobs retain their jobs making it difficult for those who work with them.

    Advice to Management

Be more selective. Just because a nurse is a warm body to fill a position and take a patient load, doesn't mean he/she is competent. You need to do a better job supporting new nurses and you need to intervene when there are issues of disrespect, incivility, and bullying.
