    Pros

Manager is excellent at honoring requests for a day off.

    Cons

Negative upper administration that spends time looking to get rid of older staff by cutting necessary departments such as the IV team. Poor staffing, Unable to get an adequate break in order to recharge and provide excellent patient care. Feel overwhelmed most of the time and extremely stressed. Could never work full time here.

    Advice to Management

Hire more nurses. Provide adequate breaks to staff. Provide positive feedback to staff. Do something for the nurses during nurses week that makes the staff feel appreciated. No one wants to work in a negative environment that provides little positive feedback. Stop the take aways during contract renewals.

    Pros

UMASS offers a competitive pay scale, and excellent benefits. Working in a non-clinical department, you may still qualify for one of the unions present.

    Cons

Staff is under appreciated. The financial strains that management feels trickle down to their staff and effects their attitude. Management likes to pin coworkers against each other. Management talks down to their employees.

    Advice to Management

Encourage team work within the department. Show staff appreciation.

    Pros

Big place, great patients, lots of opportunity to advance

    Cons

Lots of conflict on units and among staff; vision isn't clear to front line

    Advice to Management

Listen to the people on the front line. They know what to do to fix the place

    Pros

They pay very well compared to the other hospitals in the area

    Cons

My department is terribly managed, the hospital is too big and things just don't get accomplished. My department is experiencing a lot of budget cuts so we often go without breaks.

    Advice to Management

    Listen to your employees!

    Pros

Some of the physicians are excellent, as are some of the nurses and CNA's. Many insurances accepted.

    Cons

Horrible electronic medical record system, not supportive of new nurses, people that repeatedly don't do their jobs retain their jobs making it difficult for those who work with them.

    Advice to Management

Be more selective. Just because a nurse is a warm body to fill a position and take a patient load, doesn't mean he/she is competent. You need to do a better job supporting new nurses and you need to intervene when there are issues of disrespect, incivility, and bullying.

    Pros

Decent pay depending on the department, good location away from Boston so the commute may be more tolerable depending on where you live

    Cons

This is such a toxic work environment. I have worked in two different departments and it's terrible.

    Advice to Management

It's so bad I wouldn't know where to start. I guess the first thing would be to revire the people that have worked there for 30 - 40 years and see if they are still contributing at the level they should be.

    Pros

Hard working good people who just want to do the right thing. Benefits are really good.

    Cons

Too many high priorities and not enough people. Sometimes having leadership who has been at a company for a long time can be a challenge to overcome. Inappropriate behavior and poor performance are tolerated in those who have been with the company for a long time.

    Advice to Management

There are really great people at UMass. Listen to them. Encourage them. Help them grow and weed out the who don't cut it even if they have been with UMass for a long period of time. Rewarding poor behavior or performance because someone have been there for a long time doesn't move UMass in the right direction.

    Pros

Many dedicated, long-term, employees. Workplace diversity and a variety of opportunities. World class research emerging from the affiliated medical school. Academic medical center with a (potentially) bright future. The talent within the organization is amazing. Benefit packages are second to none; truly untouchable in the market these days. The role of this organization within the surrounding community is HUGE. Many opportunities to connect with volunteer opportunities. When the organization is turned around it will return to its former glory.

    Cons

It does feel like constant firefighting (even in replacing staff who leave- see below regarding succession planning) and the goals and "must-do" (for safety) projects get triaged and potentially lost, which contributes to the employees' frustration. Work-life balance for those who hold themselves accountable can be hard; those who see it as only a job seem to have work-life balance figured out and can walk away at the end of the day. Accountability and, occasionally, professionalism across the organization are lacking.

    Advice to Management

The organization seems to lack a clear mission and vision that applies to every single employee. Current environment is lacking a sense of pride and community within the organization. Many staff feel defeated but remain committed to the cause and believe in the future of the organization. Succession planning seems nonexistent. Training opportunities exist but you have to seek them out and pursue them.
