    Great Place to work

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Charlotte, NC

ProsLots of holidays and time off during the year. Closed during adverse weather conditions and you need only report if you are considered essential.

ConsNot many opportunities for promotions or pay increase. Seeing as though it is considered a government position there are not may raises.

    Typical graduate research job.

    Graduate Research Assistant (Current Employee)
    Charlotte, NC

ProsThere is a lot of flexibility as far as the work hours and the environment is very laid back. I often come to my office space late in the morning and leave in the evening because that is when I am more focused.

ConsYour area of research is limited to what grants the advisor is offered. So you want to choose your advisor wisely.

    Very flexible, not very demanding.

    Maintenance Assistant (Current Employee)
    Charlotte, NC

ProsWorking at HRL, I got a huge variety of experience. Every day held something new. The scheduling for student workers was extremely flexible.

ConsThe variance of work from day to day caused some bad habits in the workforce. Some days would be very easy and relaxed, and some days would be difficult. This is all well and good, but some of the employees got a bit too used to the easy days. When the hard times came, a lot of people forgot that they were being paid to work.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement was fairly hands-off except for when advice was needed. I like that a lot. Give instructions and they'll get done. Step-by-step advice will be requested if desired.

    NIce work enviroment and colleagues.

    Graduate Teaching Assistant (Current Employee)
    Charlotte, NC

ProsThe good thing about work on campus is it's not so stressed out compared with jobs in industry. Also, the staff and colleagues are very friendly and supportive.

ConsThe wage of course is not as high as off campus. Meanwhile, the job load is not always the same because of the difference of courses. Some are not too busy while some are lots of load.
