I have been working at UNC Charlotte full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Nice team members, interesting environment, great opportunities, urban research environment, lovely campus, parking on campus, young innovative faculty, great facilities

    Cons

Some political issues, funding almost always a problem as the state is the primary funder, lack of vision in the leadership, more innovation would be better

    Advice to Management

be more visionary, look beyond , do not micromanage, push the borders and try new things

I have been working at UNC Charlotte full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great benefits for employees. Time off is absolutely generous, and helps with volunteering, sick time, and vacation.

    Cons

Very political system. It's all about who you know and who you're friends with. If you're not "in the group" you feel very neglected. Also comparatively low pay to the rest of the departments and universities.

    Advice to Management

Managers shouldn't be afraid to get to know those on their team. The management feel very hands off and aren't really involved in work the department is doing.

I have been working at UNC Charlotte (Less than a year)

    Pros

Overall good school, with decent programs

    Cons

Computer science related degrees spend too much time on theory and should devote upward of 55% of curriculum on practical applications not theory. Theory has its place in academia, but it is a little disappointing leaving the school with no real skills that you can attest to. Also key classes for your major can be filled up by people who are simply taking electives which is annoying and can hinder your progression.

    Advice to Management

Focus more on practical uses for CCI department. Also create a CCI version of ENGL 2116 technical communications as trying to fight the entire university for a slot in the class is pathetic, I almost had to take another school year just be able to get that class.

    Pros

Excellent working conditions, faculty and staff always very organized.

    Cons

None to think of at this time.

    Advice to Management

Continue to build communication skills within departments.

I have been working at UNC Charlotte full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The Chancellor and senior leadership have a strong vision for driving this school to becoming great. The staff work hard to accommodate and execute on the vision. New faculty coming in to the university are top notch and bring promise with their research and determination.

    Cons

The school is transitioning from being a teaching commuter school to being a research intensive university. Currently it seams that most of the intensive research is purely superficial and used as public relations hype. There is a cadre of older faculty who are here because they don't want to work hard nor create an environment of excellence. They tend to have a strong authority on decision making which inhibits progress. The first situation I have seen where letting faculty have a voice actually is hurting the university.

    Advice to Management

You are doing a great job. Onward and upward, however don't forget to stand behind your talk with personnel and infrastructure. If we are a research intensive institution we need to do more than $50 million a year in research. In a lot of schools, departments are bringing in more research funding than that.

I worked at UNC Charlotte full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Excellent School, diverse student body and exceptional instructors, many of whom were professors at Harvard, George Mason, Temple and various other prestigious institutions.

    Cons

As an adult student I found that the most interesting course offerings were offered during daytime hours only. This severely limits the range of the overall collegiate experience for adult learners.

    Advice to Management

Offer more of a diverse selection of courses for evening students as opposed to courses that could be found on the community college level.

I worked at UNC Charlotte part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Not the typical internship or graduate assistantship at UNCC. Had the opportunity to network, apply my degree, and learn about the UNC System.

    Cons

The pay period was twice a month, which was unusual. Otherwise, it was great.
