Great if you're part of the clique

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Pittsburgh, PA

ProsCentral location in downtown Pittsburgh. Flexible hours mean good work-life balance.

ConsSenior management are people who have known each other for years if not decades. If they don't know you then good luck ever getting noticed. Promotions are based mainly on how long you've worked there and who your friends are. The Health Plan is successful only because of its connection to UPMC, not because they hire smart people. No commitment to career development. Company-wide initiatives such as "Dignity and Respect Campaign" are designed to appeal to a kindergarten-level intellect.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe willing to spend a little more money in order to hire the best of the best, rather than just a bunch of warm bodies who just want to yawn their way through the day and collect a paycheck.

    A long unguided 10 months.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Pittsburgh, PA

ProsLarge company with lots of contacts and opportunity to move.

ConsLarge company with lots of office politics. The company is so dominant in the area that employees are a cog in the machine and are treated as such, like a part that is easily replaced.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake more interest in providing quality guidance to your employees and less time covering your own interests. Quality employees and proper training will cover you in the end anyway.

The work experience and treatment by management depends on the department culture.

Case Manager (Former Employee) Pittsburgh, PA

ProsFlexible hours...workday is 8-4:30 but if you need to do something during the day or need to adjust your hours, it can be done if your total work hours amount to 8 in a day
    Reasonable salary usuaaly apid midrange
Tolerable working conditions- nice offices, individual cubicals
Work independence for the most partnoone looking over your shoulder all day

    ConsUnnecssary and unproductive meetings
Difficulty getting time off usually due to lack of staffing
Unknowlegable managers who rely on experience nurses to provide information on 'rules'
Nepotism, people are usually promoted based on their frindships or physical appearance

Advice to Senior ManagementQuit holding grudges against employees who know more about the business than you do. Promotions should be based on job performance and interpersonable skills rather on friendship.

The largest employer in the Pittsburgh region

Systems Analyst (Former Employee) Pittsburgh, PA

Pros- Solid benefits, especially health insurance
    - Pleasant work environment since moving to US Steel building
    - Exposure to all lines of business in the health insurance industry
    - Growing

Cons- Pay is average, not too competitive
    - Lots of opportunities for advancement at lower levels, much more scare as you move upward
    - You find out key company information in the local newspaper before finding out from management.

Advice to Senior ManagementI.T. needed more structure and forward looking processes. They have grown very fast but do not have the processes and structure to scale out without lot of growing pains.

Prosinnovative, fast paced, good recognition for going good work. good sr mgt. lots of career ops, new roles created as needed

Conssome dead wood in mid mgt needs to be removed. too many disparate projects going on at once spreads resources too thin

Great people, the work is demoralizing

Healthcare Concierge (Former Employee) Pittsburgh, PA

ProsThe upside for working at the Healthplan is by far the coworkers. They have a great mix of young new talent and experienced veterans. Given the scope of the job, they try their best to be understanding and give you time to develop necessary skills.

ConsDuring my tenure, there were a number of downsides. Some related to the job itself, others due to organizational issues.

First and foremost, its not an easy job. Prepare to be public enemy #1. However, management seemed to do little to alleviate this fact.

    Turnover was high.

Suggestions would be taken by middle management but disregarded by upper management.

    Good luck getting time off.

Metrics seem to highly favor the quantity of calls rather than quality.

I guess it's all part of working in a call center.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake some time to listen to the talent you bring in. They really know their stuff and they all truly want to succeed. The high turnover makes it very difficult to breed leaders.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend
