I have been working at UPS full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The work environment is extremely relaxed, work hours are very flexible. One of the few accounting jobs where you're not working a crazy amount of hours. The starting salary is great and we mainly promote from within, so there are opportunities for advancement. Benefits are also really good.

    Cons

Training program doesn't exist - you are trained through peers and self learning.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

We need to have a training program since the IT building is so specialized. It will build a better foundation for employees. I feel there are basic concepts that are often missed out on.

I have been working at UPS full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Assignments are challenging and offer great exposure to the many business units within the company. Growth potential narrows as you climb the ladder, but those who demonstrate excellence, perseverance, flexibility, and prudent risks are amply rewarded

    Cons

Too much focus on budget management to the extent the management employees must record hours worked against internal budgets on a daily basis.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat management salaried employees as management salaried employees.

I have been working at UPS

    Pros

o UPS is a solid compay that has proved it can substain through a recession.
o Great Pension Plan and comparible benefits
o Opportunities to learn new technology
o Opportunities to go on special assignment
    o Opportunities to work abroad
    o E-Learning

    Cons

    o No telecommuting
    o No work life balance
o Inconsistance flex time or none at all - it depends which portfolio you report into
    o Few promotion
o No discipline for middle managers who do not follow UPS's policy book

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Select managers who are leaders, so that employee can begin to trust and respect them. In our current environment, managers in all portfolios are not trusted and lead by fear.

I have been working at UPS

    Pros

The benefits are good and the employees work as a team...almost family-like.

    Cons

Low compensation and micro managaing! Literally, some managers sit by the entrance to watch employees,

Not a place to work if you have school-age children as there's no worklife balance at UPS throughout the U.S. In order to be considered for a promotion, you must work at least 45+ hours a week. Promotions are limited and some have passed up because an employee "only works 40 hours". There are many who have reached the point where they're "ready for the next level" but have been at that point for years due to the # of people in the pipline,

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

UPS needs an overhaul from its old school way of treating its employees. If you dont treat your people fairly and with respect (and there's lots of that going on), UPS will no longer be revered as a "good company to work for",

I have been working at UPS

    Pros

stable company with a good reputation ( from the outside)

    Cons

can't change quickly. There are too many long timers( with 25 -35 years) in the company who are financially able to retire at 55 but are only interested in keeping status quo until they can get out.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop spewing the rhetoric about the "company values" and run a business. How many other fortune 50 companies never had a CEO with previous CEO experience?

    I worked at UPS

    Pros

Security (for now). Though there seems to be movement to outsource IS functions. If you are performer chances are you will be trusted and left alone.

    Cons

Bureacracy which is found in larger organizations. Too much rah rah and emphasis on stock ownership which should be a personal choice. Promotions not always fair. I was passed over for promotion even though I had more experience and education than the person promoted. That person was good friends with the promoting manager. So they like to talk the line that they are fair, in actuality they are no different from other firms. IS has too many people and I can see more downsizing.. they do not call it layoffs. But it has happened in IS. Its called elimination of a functional area and people have to find jobs elsewhere or take a package which is never that great.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look at people you have promoted and determine if it was fair or if it was because the person had a contact or were a good BS artist.
