I have been working at URS Corporation

    Pros

Good benefits, Opportunities to apply for transfer positions all around the world. Clearly defined expectations.

    Cons

No clear path for advancement. The workplace politics can be tricky to navigate. There is a clear divide between staff and management. I'm given to understand that the environment varies drastically from office to office. Reorganization of departments can happen in a disorganized fashion making it difficult to determine who your contact is for HR, for Payroll and others. Depending on your title and position, there are lots of rules which can be very restrictive and humbling.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide clearly defined paths for growth and upward mobility. Do not limit the possibilities to a chosen few and assume you know who is willing and able to assume more responsibility.

    Cons

Redundant tasking for some workers, Very high tempo work environment in all types of weather. Not a good job if you are attending college.

I worked at URS Corporation full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The firm enjoys a long and illustruous reputation within the AEC community. They designed many iconic projects around the country that still impact the way we move people and products to this very day. Given their size, they are able to get deals for their employees in some non-traditional areas like cell phone plans, car insurance, etc. which are nice perks. For technical staff starting their career this is good launching pad as there are a LOT of senior staff members to (hopefully) learn from.

    Cons

VERY bureaucratic; poor employee morale; excessive procedures for the simplest functions (think TPS reports in Office Space); no concept of work-life balance. Impossible to get a budget approved. As most people with the firm have been "aquired" rather than hired there is little alligence ot the firm. Non technical staff have no career path, are offered little training and are generally overworked, underpaid and underappreciated. Technical staff typically is comprised of either folks with over 20 years of experience or those with under five years...everyone else bails which creates a talent vacuum.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop making it harder for people to do their jobs with crippling procedures and policies. Find ways to keep mid-career employees. Realize that 60 hour weeks should not be norm for anyone regardless of their role within the firm...and stop expecting people to put in those kinds of hours.

I worked at URS Corporation full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

A relative amount of freedom and work/life balance. Good people working in staff positions. Some interesting projects occur from time to time.

    Cons

Rampant favoritism and a complete unwillingness to support staff through equipment and other purchases. If your computer or the network doesn't work, that merely means the client will pay more. Management is completely out of touch and if you don't mind stepping on other people, you will advance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reward staff for their contributions. Focus less on delegation and management and reward those that actually do the work. I saw this repeatedly. Those that managed work-load and others got promoted. While those lower level employees doing 90% of the work got paltry raises. For the record, I was not one of these lower level people with no advancement potential.

I worked at URS Corporation full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Working for URS is was more like trying to survive on your own without any support. no room for advancing in the company. and you only got regconition only if you made the managers look good. and out of five years i only got one raise.

    Cons

at URS we had to pay out of pocket for benefits towards the end, and you got no pat on the back when needed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

my advice to the company would be to have them hear what the employees have to say and have better management skills. and to give others a chance to advance with in the company.

Former Employee - Systems Engineer in Austin, TX

I worked at URS Corporation full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    - Fat, greasy free food (if that's your thing).
    - Co-workers spend a lot time together at the shooting range over the weekends (if that's your thing).
    - Strong good old boys mentality (if that's.., well, I think you get it).

    Cons

    - IT department resembles company structure (compartmentalized and segmented).
    - There is a deeply rooted history of outright resentment between groups, making the working environment unbearably toxic.
    - Management tolerates unprofessional behavior.
    - Welcome to the minors!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

We know it's all a big joke, but at least pretend you care.

    Pros

Once you find your niche, the company will support you in growing those skills. You'll get really good at that specific skill-set.

    Cons

There isn't much room to grow out of that niche you create. It's hard to become a project manager if you only have experience in a few specific areas.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Mentor new hires.
