They paid for my education but there are no incentives and the rate of progression is based soley upon time.

I have been working at US Air Force full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The benefits are great. The insurance and family benefits are probably some of the best out there. There are many places to live in the world. The Air Force is very big on improving their member’s education so there are full time programs, tuition assistance, certification programs, training programs, etc. If you chose not to improve yourself it is on you and nothing against the company.

    Cons

IncentivesThere are no incentives to motivate you. You promote at the same rate as everyone else. The bureaucracy is insane.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow faster promotions based on performance.

I have been working at US Air Force full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

A lifetime of experience, training, and mentorship while serving something bigger than yourself. The Air Force is unique among the other services where it actually has a regionally accredited college that awards Associate Degrees based on credits Enlisted Airmen recieve for military training. Additionally they have a graduate school that officers can recieve degrees focused on the sciences, math and engineering focuses.

    Cons

Not a job for everyone but worthwhile. There are high expectation for those that serve.

I have been working at US Air Force full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    - Come for the benefits, stay for the people
    - Good benefits (or at least worry--free benefits, for now) i.e. retirement pay, Roth TSP, medical, base facilities, access to metropolitan parking in some cases, travel if you like to travel, etc...
    - Training and education opportunities
    - Civilian hours in the Acq world
    - The AF will take good care of you and your family

    Cons

    - Job security is not what it was
    - You may have to move every few years or months (this may be a pro for some)
    - Bureaucratic bs - try it for 2 years or less and you will understand

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make real decisions instead of "reorganizing" every 2 years. Program overschedule/overbudget/underperforming? Don't be afraid to make that "cut" recommendation and stick with it. Just because politicians want to add pork to their districts doesn't mean you have to agree.

    Pros

Benefits, travel, being part of a team

    Cons

    Away from family while deployed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop trading away people for new toys. We're the best Air Force in the world and no one is even close. We don't need every new weapon system that is thrown at us.

I have been working at US Air Force full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

People focused, and heavy on benefits. Excellent job security. Currently government pay and benefits are better than their civilian counterparts

    Cons

Many of your freedom's are put on hold, you have to move and go where they tell you. To excel it helps to "play the game", which is very political and bureaucratic. It is hit or miss on whether your job will be fulfilling, or whether you will be just another cog in the wheel. I've seen both extremes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The military is so prideful and arrogant, and that starts at the top.
