A service truly dedicated to protecting the public, environment, and country.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at US Coast Guard full-time for more than 5 years

ProsYou have people you consider family for life (aka Shipmates). The ability to earn the GI Bill and then use it is probably one of the best benefits with serving in the military.

ConsThe Coast Guard is known to eat their young. The service does not have the best officers promoted merely the ones who know how to kiss butt and have no real leadership skills.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake care of your people.

Professionalism, Responsibility, Service and Camaraderie

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at US Coast Guard full-time for more than 10 years

ProsA worthwhile mission saving lives and protecting property. A culture of excellence and empowerment that puts a large amount of responsibility on relatively young members. A culture of mentorship and respect permeates the organization, making it like a family.

ConsNot an ideal profession when raising a family. A lot of time is spent away from home. Members have to move every 3-5 years. Each unit has a higher rate of turnover than other agencies which leads to a lack of continuity in operations.

There is also a disconnect between the vision of senior leadership and the vision of front line operators. There is a lot of planning that occurs at higher levels with no clear objectives. It's a smaller service that shouldn't struggle with the bureaucratic challenges of larger organizations.

Advice to Senior ManagementA clearer delineation of function between strategic managers, operation-level supervisors and front line tacticians would allow the organization to take advantage of its smaller relative size in order to be more nimble and responsive. Strategists don't need to be involved in execution and vise versa but there should be a clearer alignment from strategy and vision to execution.

Overall the CG is a good organization to work for.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at US Coast Guard

ProsBenefits, tax break, decent pay, job security, good training opportunities, travel, good promotion or advancement potential, good work schedule if not on a cutter.

ConsBenefits are good b/c they are free. The actual medical care at a navy base is sub par at best. It's like using WebMD and having an unlimited ibuprofen prescription. If you like getting things done quickly too bad, there's a bunch of hoops to jump through. You have to fill out 4 forms just to purchase a part. The small boat world is plagued with inspections all through out the year, which could be combined to save time, but that's not the spirit of the program in the CG. You are hammered with mandated training every year over the same topics. They give people with the lowest ASVAB score requirement, the ability to run small units. I could write an essay on that topic but I'll spare you the time. A lot of things happen that don't make a lot of sense but it's either policy or someone's convenience. Overall it's like I said, good place to work but there's a lot of things that drive you slightly crazy every day. Could be better but it's a military branch not a civilian company.

My experience with the coast guard was pleasant. I used it as somewhere to start and grow as a man.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at US Coast Guard

ProsThe coast guard was a great alternative for college instead of going to school straight out of high school

ConsIf you have a family or plan on starting one, it can be very difficult to raise a family if your stuck on a boat.
