I worked at US Coast Guard full-time for more than 3 years
Pros – Touring the world on the governments dime. The post 911 g ibill.
Cons – Its just a job THAT OWNS YOU!!!... poor salary pay for the hours you work and the time your away, no full retirment, heath care that dosn't want to pay for anything but 500 Mg ibprohen, no advancement, the complet sloths and D-bags you work with, the "racial diversity" the coast guard crams down you throat, and the don't ask dont tell that was repealed and the firey hoops you had to jump through on a daily basis just to do your job.
Advice to Senior Management – Quit micromanaging and trying to justify your job and proove who has the biggest swinging wang, whe understand your our boss you dont have to put us down.

I have been working at US Coast Guard full-time for more than 7 years
Pros – College, guaranteed paycheck, opportunities to help people
Cons – Impossible to rank up if enlisted, disgruntled leadership, the good leaders get out
Advice to Senior Management – Make HYT more aggressive as there are way to many people in the Coast Guard who are far past their time. They provide nothing but hostile work environments with their bitter attitudes and dinosaur leadership techniques. Most Officers I have worked with care more about their OERs than they do about their people. Chiefs Mess unfortunaltey has shown the same symptoms although not near as bad. Leadership classes need to be more in depth and MUCH longer than the current 5 days. Suggest looking at DOD for a base model of true leadership classes.

I have been working at US Coast Guard full-time for more than 7 years
Pros – The only positives about working in this environment is the pay and benefits, especially the retirement, education, and health benefits.
Cons – Leadership at the mid levels is poor, many supervisors belittle lower ranked individuals, waste by individual employees is rampant and no discipline is handed out in most cases. Alcohol abuse is only dealt with after the fact and too many incidents are covered up by supervisors. Poor living conditions aboard most of the vessels. Plenty more negatives but you get the point. Depending on your given rate much of what you learn with your time in the military will do you a disservice in your transition into the civilian world. Little if any active career advancement at this time, and what there is of career advancement is based on tests that have little to nothing to do with your actual function in the service.
Advice to Senior Management – There needs to be a better approach to determining leaders and superiors than just testing there book knowledge. When issues arise from the lower ranks about poor supervisors, the top leadership needs to take a closer look. More actual oversight on what money is spent on at the unit level, less redundant paperwork that provides no additional information. To admiral Papp, if he is about what he claims he is then kudos, I would look forward to a shipmate oriented boss instead of one who is only about greasing the wheels to his own fulfillment.

I have been working at US Coast Guard full-time for more than a year
Pros – Military benefits/discounts for non-military work.
Salary - sometimes a con
Tuition assistance
Kitchen in one of the buildings.
Exchange available on base.
Cons – Not good at training.
More unprofessional and unorganized than expected.
Work hours not flexible, unless you have a kid.
Poor communication between some departments. Two of my bosses sit next to each other all day and by the end of the day did not verify they were on the same page about work travel the following morning. Then they complain about lack of funds for travel because they have to make unnecessary trips to make up for not coordinating.
Advice to Senior Management – set a better example for your employees.

I have been working at US Coast Guard full-time for more than 10 years
Pros – The pay was good. The clothes were cool...mostly. Same benifits as the Dod without the need to go to war.
Cons – Too many engineers counting beans and not enough leaders to make the orgnization work. The lack of an Inspector Generals office reduces the accountablility within the service.
Advice to Senior Management – Stop playing games with the orgnization and steady the force for longer than 6 months. Slogans and logos dont do a thing to help the operators in the fleet.

I worked at US Coast Guard
Pros – A good service to join if you're looking to serve stateside with minimal foreign travel, no combat duty, and opportunity to earn money for college.
Cons – Prepare to get underway, after-all, it's a sea going service. This is something which many young people find disagreeable after joining and a reason they leave after four years. The Coast Guard often reacts in a knee-jerk fashion - and implements changes without appropriate research and funding. This leaves personnel frustrated and looking for opportunities to depart the service. Also, the Coast Guard's new policy of pushing people out at 20 years - leaves many feeling that it is a disloyal service to it's own personnel and wondering if they really want to make it a career, after-all.
Advice to Senior Management – Conduct better research before implementing changes. A lot of what the Coast Guard does appears to be knee jerk reactions - leaving personnel frustrated and searching for opportunities to depart the service.
