    Pros

    Cons

Difficult to advance if you come from private industry, must be an intern to advance, outside private industry mid career professionals scare the lifers

I worked at US Defense Finance and Accounting Service full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The stability of a government job is hard to beat, and the benefits are very good, including insurance, 401k matching up to 5%, all federal holidays off, and some positions offer teleworking.

    Cons

Some of the leadership got there by just not getting fired so some leaders didn't have some of the optimal skill sets that great leaders have. There is also lots of change in leadership between departments so you might have several bosses within the same year.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Like what I said above, focus on putting the right people into management and keep them in the same department.

Hours, Schedule, Working with Service members,

    Cons

Uneven work distribution, too many people do barely anything while a select few do all the work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Accurately appraised your employees. Management too scared to let employees know when they are slacking. Performance appraisals will read the same throughout the office.

I worked at US Defense Finance and Accounting Service full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

It wasn't the absolute worse place to work

    Cons

After waiting forever for my security clearance to come through, they pulled a "bait & switch" and downgraded my position right when they brought me on board. Then, when I found another job at another agency bringing me back to the GS level I was supposed to be at (and essentially beat them at their game), they acted mad.

Despite downgrading their employment offer, they put me on projects and gave me much more responsibility than my equivalent counterparts.

Coworkers were about half & half - half were nice, half were rude and bitter.

Supervisor was OK (albeit not the most professional) until I gave my notice. He wouldn't allow me to take leave to deal with moving issues that DFAS jacked up even though I had no work to do. Called out sick and took it anyway. Now, he points out that I didn't stay long when he gets a call for a reference check.

Culture of the place is typical cliquish Columbus Appalachian hillbilly.

Work was very fragmented, so much that you couldn't clearly understand what you were doing.

Many units work overtime and weekends depending on reporting requirements and how the calender days fall in the month.
