    Pros

Job security second to none. Benefits are excellent. Work from home opportunities are great. Management philosophy is trying to change. Great opportunity to support the military service men and women.

    Cons

Too many managers. Some can be good-ole boy and micro-managers. Hard to move around and move up. Budget cuts have eliminated a lot of lateral and upward movement potential. Just not hiring or promoting.

    Pros

Great place to work if you have small children, there's a daycare right on base. Promotions are very possible if you are a hard worker and show that you're serious about your job. Great opportunities for education and development. Benefits are as good if not better than the private sector. Pay is a little low but there is also a free fitness center and swimming pool on base, coupled with the daycare the benefits far outweigh the low pay.

    Cons

There are a lot of people who just don't care and don't want to be there. Upper Management doesn't seem to care or do anything about it. Some managers are horrible and should never have been promoted in the first place. Again no one i upper management seems to care or do anything about it. Upper Management also places silly demands on the bottom people without having a clue about what the impact might be.

    Advice to Management

Clean house! Get rid of poor performers, poor attitudes and bad managers. Hire people who want to work and want to make a difference. The bad seeds infect the rest of the employees lowering morale. Also think about what the impact down the chain will be before you start making silly demands.

    Pros

    Cons

Government is always shaky, furloughs, BRAC, and low staffing with lots of work

    Advice to Management

    Pros

    Stable employment, very accomodating, even if you don't belong to the union, you are in a union, seniority is a big factor for advancement;

    Cons

Difficult to advance if you come from private industry, must be an intern to advance, outside private industry mid career professionals scare the lifers

    Advice to Management

Break out of the silo and manage the E2E processes

    Pros

The stability of a government job is hard to beat, and the benefits are very good, including insurance, 401k matching up to 5%, all federal holidays off, and some positions offer teleworking.

    Cons

Some of the leadership got there by just not getting fired so some leaders didn't have some of the optimal skill sets that great leaders have. There is also lots of change in leadership between departments so you might have several bosses within the same year.

    Advice to Management

Like what I said above, focus on putting the right people into management and keep them in the same department.
