    Pros

This federal agency operates with a small business mentality. This is a great agency to work for if you want to have someone "have your back" but that someone is low ethics.

    Cons

In 19 years of working in IT, I have never seen office politics as severe with any employer other than DSS. The ethics of leadership with OCIO, IA, N&I are questionable.

    Advice to Management

Remove unthical leadership. Promote from outside of the agency. If one of your employees who is in good standing needs to take an extended break in employment (beyond 3 months), place them on paid Admin leave if possible. Work to retain your workforce.

    Pros

Great coworkers, positive energy on projects until leadership gets involved, decent facility and hours, easy going support staff who bond on issues that everyone sees. Extra hours not common or expected. Great training options for those looking to expand skills and leave.

    Cons

Senior management living in a fantasy world of self-importance. Integrity not present in most executives, and problem personnel are rarely dealt with (so agency leadership doesn't become aware of issues). Management taking personal credit for everything positive that happens and blaming staff for negative things is the culture.

    Advice to Management

Recognize the people that work hard and don't spend their days schmoozing. They are the next generation of leaders. Quit hiring your buddies from the intel community; there's more to DSS than counterintelligence. Don't watch quality staff walk out the door and wonder what the problem is. You're it. Have you noticed a pattern lately?

    Pros

Location is a definite plus if you live south of DC. The work is really interesting and they have a really big mission for such a small agency.

    Cons

Bonuses aren't a norm here and there are a lot of politics that dictate the pace of things but it is a great place to work.

    Advice to Management

Don't allow the employees under you to go straight to the top if they don't like an answer that is given. It is important to push back to the lowest level possible to handle situations in order for your staff to feel empowered.

    Pros

Motivated, intelligent co-workers, great direct supervisor/management, fast-paced environment, indepently set schedules.

    Cons

Current director forgot about the employees, cutting any form of flexible work schedule and decided that metrics will save everything, when it is actually employees getting into the field which directly supports the mission. Most employees in the capitol region are looking to leave.

    Advice to Management

    See cons.

    Pros

Working at the Defense Security Service opened my eyes to things surrounding secuirty clearances for different companies and people.

    Cons

It is also a place where you have to be careful about what you say and do in public.

    Advice to Management

My advice is to hire more disabled veterans and treat the contractors that work with not as there equal, but as there counterparts in maintaining the proper clearances.

    Pros

Steady government work. If you don't like to take work home, this is the place for you Respect from rest of contractor community

    Cons

Management will work you to death if you let them Little to no recognition for job well done Want you to be a cog in a machine and not make waves

    Advice to Management

Empower your employees. Give them the ability to make more decisions. Stop treating everyone like they are five years old.
