Pros
I was an intern in the Shanghai office. I had never worked in Shanghai before, an the being at the Commercial Service gave me a great perspective on the local business community. I did research, talked to local business and government leaders (often 1-on-1), and talked to American companies about their hopes/issues for the East China market. If you want to learn about the local market in a very relaxed slow-pace environment, this is the place to do it!
Cons
No money! I thought slave labor was abolished quite some time ago? Also, isn't it illegal to work on a visitor visa in China? They can't even help with a visa!? Besides learning about the local business environment, you'll also learn quite a bit about bureaucracy and illogical incentives in the U.S. government.
Advice to Senior Management
Pay your interns! Streamline incentives to make the team more efficient.
