I have been working at US Department of Homeland Security full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The federal government offers generous benefits (good health care and retirement plans, alternate work schedules, great sick leave and vacation time), and most people who work for the executive branch have a sense of the importance of their mission.

    Cons

Members of senior leadership - the top ranks of managers in various roles - are often regarded as aloof and frequently undertrained for the managerial aspects of their jobs. The experience of working inside such a large bureaucracy can be draining. Since 2010 (or so), budget cuts have deprived many agencies of the staff they need to do their jobs. Nowadys (2013), when someone leaves an agency, he or she is usually not replaced and his or her work is simply divided among those who remain. This pattern has continued in some places for years, and it's very dispiriting since the only people who could truly break the cycle are members of Congress.

    Pros

    Cons

Mandatory overtime. 16+ hours two to three times per week. Very Dangerous Job. The managers show little to no consideration for their employees. Expect not to have a life.

I worked at US Department of Homeland Security full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Government job. Security. Some easy days. Many good people who try to do good things. Actually very generous with pay levels.

    Cons

People at the upper levels of DHS are terrified of being criticized by someone above them -- or by a political appointee. Very little innovation. If you really want to do a good job, you will have a hard time being allowed to. There is much cover-your-behind activity. Some very unpleasant people in management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

My opinion won't matter to anyone in DHS management

I have been working at US Department of Homeland Security full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Flexibility in Schedule
    Hot R&D Programs

    Cons

Not a good environment for junior level employment.
Lacks mentorship and innovation within the structure and organization of personnel.
Runs off of amplified DOD policies and regulations.
Not much room for growth; most senior level personnel are ex military or qualified for retirement and not interested in leaving.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Develop more jobs to help keep junior employees within the agency.
