I worked at US Department of Homeland Security as an intern (more than an year)

    Pros

-was able to contribute substantively to many projects
-leadership very open to meeting with interns about projects, goals, career advice, etc.
-floor staff reached out a lot to involve me in projects or meetings they thought I might find interesting
-lots of training and professional development opportunities

    Cons

-impossible to transition to employment, even after ten months of glowing reviews
-refuses to sponsor even lowest-level security clearances for interns, even long-term interns, which limits the work that can be done
-overall culture of the Department is quite petty
-turnover is high because many use DHS to get into DoD/DoS

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-more opportunities for interns to become employees
-create more pride in the agency

I have been working at US Department of Homeland Security full-time

    Pros

Excellent promotion potential. People move up quickly. The job really does matter, and you feel like you're adding value for Americans.

    Cons

Take a bunch of disconnected organizations, cram them together, and what you get is chaos. There is no way to achieve the mission and please the media. You will always be the villain.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management is clueless and only interested in lining up a choice consulting gig after the resign.

I worked at US Department of Homeland Security

    Pros

Worked in disaster housing section following Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, Gustav and Ike. Work was extremely rewarding when I was able assist applicants with long term housing arrangements.

    Cons

Hiring practices were plagued by local favoritism and poor management. Due to nature of disaster response and recovery, leadership often inconsistent with expectations and performance evaluations.

I worked at US Department of Homeland Security full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Career personnel committed to public service and critical missions

    Cons

Badly conceived and structured with too many political appointees punching their tickets in a revolving door of poor management and self serving decisions; poor internal knowledge sharing; poor office space and more contractors than employees in every agency.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire leaders who understand that retaining, training, rewarding and promoting talented career employees is the only way to build an institution.

I have been working at US Department of Homeland Security full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

health insurance variable hours . holiday pay , meet new people

    Cons

very high turn over . due to bad management. they promote people based on who they like not who is best for the job. and you must be a team player or your out . black listed. rules that are a joke they do not protect the public they on slow the line down but its makes management look like they are doing something because they really have no jobs . five people standing around watching a few work leads supervisors , managers , training dept , tsse , and covert teams all watch us work on the floor and complain.. that were not perfect .. body scanners are a joke we spent millions on body scanners that don't work right they miss a lot of stuff ..

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

get rid of body scanners . stop causing people to quit . your wasting millions' of dollars rehiring and training people just to have them quit. after six months with all the staffing rules and mismanagement we don't need leads , sups, managers, bdo's . traininers, pace team all watching us and complaining when we do the work why you watch and complain about us.
