I worked at US Department of Transportation full-time for more than a year

    Pros

A very diverse mission set supporting 10 separate administrations. Even though FAA is the size of the HQ and 9 administrations combined.

    Cons

Funding shortfalls and cross talk between administrations.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Support and empower the young innovators.

I have been working at US Department of Transportation full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Like all government jobs, the usual perks are (normally) stability, good health benefits, and a good retirement investment opportunity (the Thrift Savings Plan). My co-workers are wonderful, we have an important mission which really helps too. Promotion potential is pretty good up to a point.

    Cons

The main challenge, again like all government jobs, is Congress waging war on federal workers by freezing our pay for three years. This has resulted in a major loss of buying power in a very expensive place to live.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The hiring of supervisory positions is often based on favoritism. A large portion of supervisors are very bad managers, they are technical people that were promoted beyond their abilities.

I have been working at US Department of Transportation full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Job stability. Very good core group of rank and file employees.

    Cons

Change is very hard for this organization and resistance is fierce. As such, status quo is encouraged and ambition is met with mistrust and there's no recognition for quality work. Communication is almost non-existant and bosses treat their supervisory responsibilities as extra duties and something they may get to. Senior positions are often filled with trusted individuals that are mostly unqualified for the positions.

I have been working at US Department of Transportation full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

The work is important; the skills learned can be used anywhere; quality of life balance..

    Cons

Pace of work is slow; technologies are quickly outdated; given last few years, federal service is not the place to build a career.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It's already been said many times that federal pay and promotion attitudes are decades out of date.

I have been working at US Department of Transportation full-time for less than a year

    Pros

As a federal job, it has probably been easier to transition into it from the military. It is easy to pick up the job tasks.

    Cons

The work does not require much from the employee. The focus is on time physically in office versus actual work put in. The pay appears to be less than the national average for the work performed. Inherently, there is no room for advancement.

    Pros

DOT is a regulatory agency, most people are experts in their field - even the politicals have several years of experience in the field. You can tell most people love their job & genuinely want to make a difference.

    Cons

Promotional Opportunity is a challenge because minus the politicals for most of the senior leadership this is their career.

I worked at US Department of Transportation full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Work life balance is ok, the DC location is nice, the missions are interesting. The budget is okay could be better. Nice locations for places to eat lunch. There are many parking garages around the building.

    Cons

Leadership is bad, morale is bad, network, lack of resources, poor team work

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more transparent, adopt servant leadership, be more understanding

I have been working at US Department of Transportation part-time for more than a year

    Pros

As a student intern they let me choose my own schedule. I worked with the budgets and loved my work until I did it so fast that I had nothing to do.

    Cons

Leadership has problems. Nothing ever gets done by the deadline. Several unneccessary meetings. Small company that no one outside the company is familiar with. Very slow paced.
