I worked at US Department of Transportation

    Pros

Relaxed, friendly environment. It's the government, so everyone has solid job security, which I think makes the work environment more enjoyable.

    Cons

The office location isn't located right downtown, but the area around the office is very nice. Tough to park during Nationals game days, but besides that everything is great.

    Pros

Benefits, getting paid leave, the opportunity further your training

    Cons

Supervisors have certain employees they give opportunities to advance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management should give all employees the perspective of getting training to advance in other fields.

    Pros

A very diverse mission set supporting 10 separate administrations. Even though FAA is the size of the HQ and 9 administrations combined.

    Cons

Funding shortfalls and cross talk between administrations.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Support and empower the young innovators.

I have been working at US Department of Transportation full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Job stability. Very good core group of rank and file employees.

    Cons

Change is very hard for this organization and resistance is fierce. As such, status quo is encouraged and ambition is met with mistrust and there's no recognition for quality work. Communication is almost non-existant and bosses treat their supervisory responsibilities as extra duties and something they may get to. Senior positions are often filled with trusted individuals that are mostly unqualified for the positions.

I have been working at US Department of Transportation full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Like all government jobs, the usual perks are (normally) stability, good health benefits, and a good retirement investment opportunity (the Thrift Savings Plan). My co-workers are wonderful, we have an important mission which really helps too. Promotion potential is pretty good up to a point.

    Cons

The main challenge, again like all government jobs, is Congress waging war on federal workers by freezing our pay for three years. This has resulted in a major loss of buying power in a very expensive place to live.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The hiring of supervisory positions is often based on favoritism. A large portion of supervisors are very bad managers, they are technical people that were promoted beyond their abilities.

I have been working at US Department of Transportation full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The work is important; the skills learned can be used anywhere; quality of life balance..

    Cons

Pace of work is slow; technologies are quickly outdated; given last few years, federal service is not the place to build a career.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It's already been said many times that federal pay and promotion attitudes are decades out of date.
