I worked at US Department of Transportation full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Flexible work schedules, good salaries, telework opportunities

    Cons

Very few opportunities to move from clerical to analyst positions,

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have an audit of actual duties vs. job descriptions to us as a tool for setting grade levels. Many of clerical positions still at GS-5/6 probably need to be at higher levels due to work assignments and vice versa for some mid-management positions.

I have been working at US Department of Transportation as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

Lots of wonderful tools, learning opportunities and some very smart and motivated people who are truly passionate about their jobs. Find them and figure out a way to work with them and you can be happy.

    Cons

You may not enjoy working with or around the people who are very concerned about not working one minute longer than their 40 hours, taking more than full advantage of RDO (regular day off) and Remote Work policies (a shame for folks who follow the rules and are productive), take lots of unscheduled leave and actually refuse to learn. Very strange. There is no accountability for bad behavior, a lot of looking for other teams, contractors or circumstances to blame for anything undesirable.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hold folks accountable, don't just overlook bad behavior. Do the right thing. Set the bar higher and set a clear example of what success can look like.

I worked at US Department of Transportation full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Many opportunities for employees, ability to move between departments (if you really want to and bring it up) good benefits and time off, good mentors, great culture.

    Cons

Sometimes the pace of the work can be a little slow. I would be really bored for a couple of days and have nothing to do and then other days I would be relatively busy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I worked at US Department of Transportation full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The people, the location and the benefits made working at DOT a good place. Commuting benefits were also very good. Location on the metro and bus lines made getting to work much easier.

    Cons

It is difficult to get promoted into the SES core as there are many qualified candidates and not enough positions. Best chance for promotions seems to be minorities or people with several degrees.
