I have been working at US Department of Veterans Affairs full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Well, like the title stated, salary and benefits are the perks of this job. A generous accrual of paid time off, plus federal holidays off is great for me. I've been able to put more money into my retirement in one year than I did in five years for my previous employer.

    Cons

I've only worked for the VA a little less than a year and I keep thinking it's going to get better. My background is in acute care nursing for a magnet facility for 20+ years. I am used to working with professionals. Then there was the VA..... I am accustomed to organized chaos, but the VA is JUST chaos. It seems no one is willing to pass on their own knowledge of how the VA operates. Either they just don't know themselves, or it's a "knowledge is power" thing. There is an obvious lack of professionalism. FYI...an advanced degree does not always equal a professional. This is evident at the VA. Most days there is more laughing and joking amongst staff members than getting the job done. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a fun workplace....but loud, obnoxious and unprofessional seems to be the norm here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire experienced, professional managers that will in turn hire professional staff. Once again, an advanced degree does not equal professionalism. Some traits just can't be learned.
Get rid of lazy, unproductive and unprofessional staff members. Fill those slots with capable people who are worth what they are getting paid!

I worked at US Department of Veterans Affairs part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The benefits are excellent and the wage is very good.

    Cons

Everything is at a fast pace even lunch! If your are on probation and you must take time off, you will not be paid or it will be deducted from your earnings.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It would be extremely helpful for all, if Management or one designated person train a new employee. Give that person a chance to learn all that is necessary so they are more prepared to learn all that they need to be successful and to be an asset to the department. If everyone works and supports each other then the work flow will be less stressful.
