I worked at US Department of Veterans Affairs full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Almost all of my patients followed medical directions, appreciated the care they received, and recommended our VA hospital to their veteran friends.

    Cons

We had a fairly heavy patient load and the medical records system took a lot of extra time. Virtually all employees made certain that they were out the door at the 4:30 quitting time. I found many patients were on high doses of narcotics and there was little encouragement to try to lower the doses.

I have been working at US Department of Veterans Affairs full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Serving our nations Veterans. Benefits!! 8 hours of vacation per payperiod from the start for RNs. Retirement package excellent. Autonomy for my practice and the ability to have an impact on the quality of care provided if you want to do this. Support for continuing your education is top-notch! Work-life balance encouraged.

    Cons

This is the Federal gov. - you have to understand this from the day you apply and through-out your career. If you want to make a change in the system you can but you have to have staying power. In an organization this big there are alway those who do live or work up to their potential - you have to not allow yourself to be affected but to make changes within them.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees - some listen better than others and make sure each facility has open lines of communication -saying this does not make it so.

I have been working at US Department of Veterans Affairs

    Pros

    great benefits package
    wonderful patient population
    free parking

    Cons

    -too many "chiefs"
-Nursing management does not follow their own policies and procedures
-as far as discipline...it is different strokes for different folks
-nursing management has stated that errors will not be used as a source of punishment, instead, they will be used to educate so the same error does not happen again. If that were only true. Management has instead turned nurses against nurses by making us write up our co workers for any error found. This only creates an environment of hostility which is not what was supposed to happen.
-decisions are made for nursing without representation from the staff nurses. No voice...
-human resources and nursing management do not have any respect for the nursing union. They are well aware what has to be presented/shared with the union prior to implementation as per the Master Agreement bylaws. HR and nursing management simply disregard what is expected of them from the union standpoint which results in many cease and desists.
-there are many monetary awards for the nurses but nursing managers just don't take the time to recognize their staff and write a letter nominating them
    -no appreciation extended

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-treat employees equally (i.e. no "black listed" employees)
-recognize staff nurses for the hard work that we do
-appreciate us for the different ways we contribute everyday

    Pros

Stable position. High volume for improving skills. If long term, decent benefits and retirement.

    Cons

Toxic department. Hard to break into culture. VA work culture. Slow pace is a given.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More welcoming to physicians and permanent staff, not just locums. Support employees. Do not micromanage from top down.

    Pros

    Salary and overall compensation.

    Cons

    Stress
    Red tape
    Bureaucracy
    No work life balance
Do much more with much less attitude with no additional compensation for taking on what is essentially another FTEE worth of work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop with the do more with less attitude and hire knowledgable people for jobs that have been vacated. Don't give additional duties to people just because it saves a dollar.
